Earlier this year Merlin rode from Liverpool Scarborough on a Penny Farthing The penny is older than the Clarion at 100
Et hasea inch front wheel which must make riding difficult when you have to cross the Pennines
Could Merlin be possibly Clarion’s
daftest man or
maybe the bravestX

Date 20th october 1990
The meeting was held at the Wortley hall weekend Apart from the ongoing business the following key points and decisions were
discussed
1/ Brian Birchall will be taking over from Nancy Pollock for the organisation of the Wortley Hall weekend
2/ It was pointed out that any elected National Secretary will have the use of a computer namely a word processor( for typing letters and a data base for keeping a register of addresses
3/ Concern was shown regarding the lack of attendance by Stockport section for the Hill Climb It was pointed out that their hill climb had been fixed on the same date
4/ Thanks were recorded for Allan Wray for organising the hill climb
5/ A new trophy will be awarded for the fastest 50 mile T.T. in the year by a Clarion member
6/ New venues for Easter meets as suggested by London Section A short list for 1993 was drawn up Aberystwyth Hunstanton Whitby Conference to decide on priority choice. 1992 Easter Meet will be at Llandudno
7/ A member of the Stockport section has approached the committee to discuss possibilities of an elite National Clarion Central club team Unfortunately he could not attend the meeting to discuss his ideas
8/ Ad's will be placed in the B.C.F. and R.T.T.C. handbooks for next years Easter Meet events
9/ Discussion re. nominees for committee and official positions it was felt that the following sections had not been represented for some time Committee decided to approach sections to consider more deeply the possibilities of nominations
These sections were Nottingham Crewe Stockport Sunderland Clitheroe Yorkshire Teeside London
lst Mark Bragan Calder 3 min 43.00 2nd Eric Rigby Calder 3 min 47.00 3rd S Bowering Calder 3 min 53.80
Mark Bragan was only 3/10ths of a second away from Eric Rigby's course record
The event was incorporated in Calders own open event The hill was 9/10ths of a mile long starting flattish before climbing over the M1. It then dragged on until the final
quarter where the road swung right and steepened before bending left again to finish on approx’ a 1 in 7 climb
Thanks go out again to event promoter Allan Wray who kindly offered to run the event next year
The course for this years event run in conjunction with the Heanor sections open cross was changed to Alstree Park just north of Derby Apparently this is the first time a cross has
been held in Derby The major part of the course was held through woods with some very slippery and steep ascents and descents with a stream
crossing thrown in for good measure Rain held out for the event which was voted as a success and
thanks to organiser Mr Lambert on his first but hopefully not his last promotion
Highest placed Clarion rider at 16th was Calder’s Steve Burton whose son Michael was highest placed in the under 12s Other Clarion placings were
Rider Section overall placing Ist Steve Burton Calder 16 2nd Chris Rowe Heanor 22 3rd Paul Asplin Fenland 27 4th John Belson Fenland 44 5th Paul Charlsworth Heanor 51 6th Paul Gittens Calder 56 7th Steve Clarke Fenland 59
After much date changing the event finally took place lhe
reason for the changes was that after the Junior world championships the runners requested a new track This was granted at the same time as our Championships were due to take place
Despite this there was an excellent turnout even though only the two main track teams were in attendance (Fenland and Teeside)
The Championships took place on a windy but generally warm day at the Clairville track in Cleveland

WHERE ARE YOU NOW
If you know any club mates who are not receiving this newsletter then we need to know It would appear that there are a huge number of members who have paid their subs but for one reason or another are not on our records This may be that when you move house you do not inform either your secretary or our membership secretary It may be because year after year section secretaries do not send in up to date address with your subscriptions Until this newsletter began circulation it had not really mattered because we the National Committee had expected your section secretaries to pass on any news This is hardly fair and so we intend to improve this communication but it cannot be done without your help So if you move or if someone in your section is not receiving this newsletter contact the membership secretary
