The first letter to the Clarion Newsletter came from Carlton Owens of Bolton section he writes
Dear Mr Clarke, Many thanks for the NATIONAL CLARION NEWSLETTER which I only
recieved today because I have moved from 30 Cameron Street Astley Bridge Bolton to which this newsletter was sent
I regret I shall be unable to take part in any cycling endurance tests (but I do regularly cover moderate long distances. which isn't surprising because I was 65 yrs of age and have begun to suffer from arthritis when I became a “born again" cyclist after a period of 47 yrs of little or no riding.
I don't know whether there are many “born again" cyclists but
the sport of cycling certainly has many very old and long service The oldest man I personally have ridden with on a
cyclists
number of occasions is 83 yrs old Jim Johnson of Farnworth nr Bolton I also ride fairly frequently with Albert Winstanly of Bradshaw Bolton Who is a life member of Bolton Clarion and a
great character to boot I must give credit to a very good friend T.G.Jones who was totally
responsible for re-introduction to cycling Glyn is at present the leader of Bolton Clarion family or short distance rides Since he took over the leadership of these rides their popularity has increased and he is personally responsible for quite a few new memberships to Bolton Clarion I shall always claim that Glyn Jones saved me from rapid physical deterioration and provoked a new zest for life in me
I am also sure that cycling is the best possible excercise for any age
of person who has the ability to "cock a leg" over a bicycle
Long live the cry “BOOTS!! and SPURS!!"
Yours Sincerely Carlton Owens

Dear Ian
Thankyou for the new style “Clarion Bulletin” I like it very much When Bob and I were first married we knew Through the Clarion Fellowship a lady who was then in her eighties who remembered Robert Blachford and bicycle deliveries of the “Clarion” newspaper She gave me her fellowship pin a silver trumpet with an enamelled "Cc" still a treasured possesion
It’s high time we had a new image.
More power to your elbow
Regards
Gwyneth Cleveland

EASTER MEET 1990 CONFERENCE REPORT
Chairman Bob Waddilove Nationa] President and member of Crewe section
MAIN POINTS
1/ John Leese announced that he will be standing down as racing secretary
after this year Start thinking of suitable candidates within your section now
2/ Committee A debate was heard about the fact that two of the nominated committee
members did not qualify to rule 5.2 ,5.8 (old rule 10) As without these two members there would have only been three
members of the committee it was put to the vote
For acceptance 59
Against 3 The committee now stands as those stated earlier
3/ Conference requested to add Mountain biking to rule 2.3 under clubs
objects to promote all aspects of cycling This cannot be done without a rule change but the committee
will put it forward to next conference
4/ Motions 1 to 10 by Fenland section re changing Championship awards for first places from medals to Plaques was defeated
5/ Motion from Clitheroe section to propose that appointed officials should retire at 65 Motion lost
For 29: Against 33
6/ Motion by committee to increase subs to Seniors £2.00 Juniors £1.50
This was to pay someway towards the cost of distributing this newsletter There was mixed feeling from the conference
Some felt the Clarions bank balance of £4000 ish should not need a subs increase whilst others felt that two pounds was a very low fee to be member of the countries largest cycling club not including the CTC
Motion Carried
For increase 51
Against 9
7/ New rule 8.4 re Brian Braithwaite memorial photography award Carried unanimously
8/ Public Relations Officer an appointed post was given to lan Clarke (who's he?) however candidates are being looked for to take over this prestigious and fundamentally important post
RULE CHANGES
The current version of the rules at date of conference was accepted as Version 3.1 date 3/02/90 Due to rule changes passed at conference
the next version will be Version 4.0
If any member requires to see these rules then please contact your section secretary or the National Secretary
EASTER MEET 1990 GENERAL REPORT
The general concensus was that everybody had a good time On friday evening we were treated to a cabaret of a band lead by one of the Nolan sisters and an amazing magical act by a very nimble young lady including cart wheels splits fire crackers and a large white cat which came from nowhere
This was the “civic reception” which is provided free of charge by Blackpool council and was very well recieved apart from the fact their budget would not stretch to our accustomed free buffet still I believe the magic act more than made up for it
Saturday morning saw the reliability ride whilst the afternoon saw the Bert Brown memorial '10' strongly supported by both riders and rain Bert Brown team award was won by Fenland section by default
(surely there must be more teams of two ladies out there)
In the evening we were entertained by a disco and more than
enteritained by the youth of Stockport Section their singing on the stage was nearly as painful as riding into the wind along Cockerham sands by the way how come such an active section did not submit
a claim for the Tom Groom Trophy for section of the year
Sunday morning came to and most of us attended the Kenneth Humphries ‘25’ A fair back wind to the turn lulled some of us into a false sense of security and speeds halved on the return A.K.Corbett of the
Dinnington road club still managed a 1.01.46 (Too much power to my elbow and not enough to the legs.... ed)
The conference on sunday afternoon was the most heated I have seen since Cleethorpes in 1985 For those of you who think this is boring
you should come along and have your own say
Sunday evening led us all to say our farewells after the prize presentation and the Lady Mayors speech which invited us to hold our
Conference and Easter Meet at Blackpool every year The feeling in the air was not mutual I believe Blackpool was too large for us and a bit over the top Remember we are open to suggestions for venues
a list of venues to date will be shown in the next issue

‘hen returning home froma recent National Committee Meeting held at the Yorkshire Clarion Clubhouse at Chevin nd, Nenston-in-‘Nharfdale, I could not fail to wonder why Clarion Sections do not make use of the very excellent accommodation facilitie
available at this Clubhouse.
The stone-bullt building comprises a "Committee Room", comfortably furnished and with T.V. set for use by visitors and with dormitory accommodation for both sexes (12 beds in the Men's Dormitory and beds in the Ladies'). Wash basins, toilets and showers are also provided, not only for Clubhouse parties but also for campers on the Clarion Camp site adjacent to the Clubhouse. A spacious kitchen is fitted out with electric cooker, refrigerator, four gas rings and an ample supply of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans for the use of self cookers;there is a constant supply of hot water. Heating is by electric wall-mounted radiators in both the Committee Room and the dormitories, bunk beds are extremely comfortable with pillows and blankets available.
Mther grganisations frequent the Clubhouse, an indication of its popularity, but so few Clarion Sections take advantage of the Clarion's own premises sm that it occurs to me that this must bedue to lack of knowledge within the Sections of the Club.
I do know that London Clarion members enjoyed a few days stay there last year and it is a popular venue for 30lton members too.’ Providing a responsible official reserves accommodation then you can book your own private party there. There is a warden living on the adjacent residential caravan site but bookings must be made through the Clubhouse Secretary, namely Harry Beardshall of "Belle Dene"
15, Barnsley Road, WAKEFIELD, West Yorkshire.
Situated on the road that runs across the length of the Chevin, the Clubhouse is ideally situated for trips out to several ‘eauty spots in this part of Yorkshire, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Yateley Bridge, Grassington, Kettlewell etc. For those addicted to the T.V. “soap programmes, the village of “Esholt, as depicted in the Emmerdale Farm series, is but four or five miles away and is well worth a visit to
v iew this very pretty village, Gespite. any T.V. interests) An additional attraction of course is "The Chevin" Inn, merely a few yards up the road from the Clubhouse.
The Clubhouse itself is located about a quarter of a mile on the road leading in
the direction of Otley from the Chevin Inn.
WHY NOT BOOK A PARTY OF YOUR SECTION MEMBERS AND FRIENDS TO STAY AT THE CLUBHOUSE, either for a long weekend or more? I am sure you will wish to revisit at some future date once you have savoured the very excellent amenities available in this
delightful spot........ come amd go as you please clubhouse key supplied:
