From The Secretary
Well, it's certainly been a year to remember, our Centenary Year has been quite a busy one and the efforts put on by all have been rewarded by increased publicity and new members.
The attendance at the Easter Meet was the biggest for many years, this followed our Birthday Dinner at Birmingham which set the scene for 1994. Other events included the Centenary Ride of Vintage and Veteran Cycles organised between our Merlin Evans and John Pinkerton of the Veteran Cycle Club which went down well, starting at Birmingham though Ashbourne and on to the Pump House Museum at Manchester, see photos later.
At long last the Clarion Road Race Championships has come of age with a massive entry from many Clarion sections, all thanks to those who participated but especially George Masson and the Calder Clarion for another top promotion.
Our work this year has helped our membership by an increase of some 80 plus new members the best for decades let's hope we can keep it going.
Next years Easter Meet will be at the ever popular and welcoming Skegness, this will be our 100th Easter Meet, not one to miss.
The Secretary suffering to hold a wheel in the National Clarion Road Race Championships organised by George Masson and the Calder Section.

Where does it all go?
A few people have asked where their memberships fees go. I hope to be able to give some indication here. Two years ago we put Clarion subs' up from £2.50 to £4.00 for senior members as we were making a considerable loss.
Our rules ensure that subs’ increases (or decreases!) must be passed by conference. All subs’ increases passed by conference do not apply until January 1st the following year so it may take two years before we can affect any financial slippage.
Every year the costs to the club vary depending on what we do, but here's a brief breakdown on where your subs’ go to:
Easter Mt subsidy £0.50
Postage expense £0.75 Nat Officers exp’ £1.25 Insurance £0.25 Phone bills £0.25 News letter
(excl' postage) £0.60 Affiliations £0.10 Bank £0.05 Medals etc. £0.15 Total £3.90
If we consider that the senior subs' are £4, we have 70 juniors paying only £3, and we also have some 65 non-paying life members, so you can see roughly where it all goes.
This doesn’t include any capital items of equipment that may be needed every few years.
So now you know!

Resolutions Wanted by 30th November
If there are any rules within the Clarion that you are not happy with, or wish to add, then now is your opportunity.
Our constitution and rules allow for resolutions to come from Sections, Proposed resolutions to conference will then be circulated to all sections to allow for any amendments. Following this, the final agenda for the 1995 Easter Conference will be sent out to all sections who will then instruct their delegates how to vote.
The motions to conference will be put forward by a section delegate, questions and opinions are allowed from individuals once only and then the delegate forwarding the motion can respond. After this we have a card vote on the motion, each section is allotted one vote for every 5 members (the number of members are based on those forwarded 1 week before conference) and givena card stating this number.
That's democracy!

Medals Needed!!!
After this years Easter Meet I vowed to put together a collection of Clarion medals from various sections.
This collection would then be put in trust with the National Cycling museum at Lincoln. So far I have medals from a few sections: Fenland, Nottingham, Calder, Manchester, Bolton and a number of National medals.I am keen to pursue this as it will be the most impressive selection of medals at the museum so keep them coming especially those sections yet to be represented.
Better than losing them in the bottom of a drawer for nobody to see!
A Message from Oz
Albert E Johnson is known by quite a few Clarion members. A life member of the Clarion born new years day 1924 says "Iam still alive and kicking” and “pleased to hear that the old club is going strong and continues to ensure great fellowship amongst your new members and future new members”
by all accounts Albert is an active campaigner for cyclists rights in Bayswater and against cyclist being forced by law to wear helmets, more power to your writing elbow, Albert.

The Clarion Committee are always grateful to receive any ideas you may have about the Clarion.
Please write to us with your ideas.

Photos and Videos Req'd
At this years Easter Meet we put together a group photograph, several people took shots but I don't have a copy.
A desperate plea from your hardworking National Secretary goes out to anyone with a copy, or negatives or even a video. It would be nice to keep one.
A message from Canada John Backhouse Clarion
member from Calgary Canada wrote to me saying "we were so pleased that we made the trip to Lincoln. The gracious and warm reception we received made up for the less than attractive weather..” apparently the worst they had seen for the 93/94 winter, and that's from Canada!

Clarion Road Race Championships
For the first time the Clarion road race championships was run in the Oliver Twist event by the Calder Clarion. A tough triangular course with one long drag soon split the field in both the Junior and Senior events with many riders packing and the remainder continuing in small groups. Ironically the Senior event was won by an ex- Clarion member Danny Webb now riding for the Bradford Olympic.
The event was a huge success with all credit going to George Masson and his Calder Clarion helpers -thanks!

Clarion Track Championships
For the first time in several years more than two sections travelled to the Clairville stadium in Middlesborough Stockport Clarion joined the perennial Fenland Team and the local lads Teesside, also supporting the event were locals from the Bay Clarion.
Pursuit
As always the very large Czech Trophy was fiercely contested this time ride offs were needed to find the finalists, Stockport beat Teesside 'B' whilst Fenland beat Teesside 'A' to meet Stockport in the final.
The newcomers proved to be too much for the Fenland and whilst they were never more than one or two bike lengths behind, Stockport picked up the pace in the last three laps to win by 4 seconds. (I hope they polish the trophy as well as Alison did! Ed)

Obi Sid Cl 908
Like the majority of Bolton people of his generation Sid Clemmett left school at fourteen to work in the mill. Born thirty years later than he was, he would surely have continued at school and gone to university although this would had made no difference at all to his strength of character and integrity. As it was, he became one of the highly skilled operators of the spinning mules which produced the finest cotton yarns, Eventually he was to be spinning manager at one of Bolton's biggest and most modern mills.
Outside working hours, as a teenager in the 1920's. Sid became a keen competitive cyclist, showing high talent in time trials and on the track as a member (and later secretary) of Bolton Wheelers. In 1930 he joined Bolton Clarion Cycling Club and was an outstanding Club Champion in 1931, and again the following year. He also showed exceptional organising and leadership qualities, being elected Racing Secretary in 1932 at the age of 23 and Club Secretary three years later.
With Sid as Secretary, Bolton Clarion flourished as never before, becoming by far the biggest Section in the National Clarion with over 200 members; and he was elected to the National Committee as the Manchester Union's representative.
He was not just a meticulous and hard working Secretary, though. He found time to encourage and help younger Club members to develop their cycling abilities to a high level. And with friend and Clubmate Jimmy Thornley he formed a double-act which entertained audiences with songs and humour all over the North-West.
Ina reserved occupation when the second world war started, he arranged collections so that all Bolton Clarion members serving in the forces could receive regular postal-orders with greetings from the Club. At the same time he made strenuous efforts to keep the Manchester Union Clubhouse at Oversley Ford near Styal in Cheshire going, cycling there every weekend to do maintenance work, and forming the Friends of the Valley Association to raise funds.
In 1947 Sid retired as Club Secretary to make way for a younger person and was made a life member of the National Clarion. He was able then to devote more time to home and family, to Lil and Neil.
But his work for Bolton Clarion was not finished. Like other Clarion Sections, Bolton fell on hard times in the 1970's and like many, might have disappeared, but for Sid. He became Secretary and treasurer once again, and with half a dozen other old-timers, kept it going for a decade, believing that one day it would be revived.
And it was, in 1983, when Sid was able to hand over the Secretaryship to me and become Club President. There was a big in-flux of new members and I had to rely heavily on his knowledge and experience. As always, he was unfailingly patient, encouraging, kindly, generous and good-humoured in helping the younger people (as he saw us!)
Eventually, he stood down as Club President, but when Jim Ferrier was so tragically killed at the end of last year Sid, with his usual determination in an emergency, came back to the post just before he fell ill. And whenever we went to see him in hospital and nursing home he asked about the Club and was giving kindly advice and encouragement right up to the end of his life.
The Club will survive but there will never be no replacement for Sid himself. He represented all that was best in the Clarion which has never been just a cycling club, but a movement
based on enduring ethical principals. It was these that Sid Clemmett lived out in his life, and which he would want us to follow the principals of Mutual Aid and Good Fellowship.

Obituary
Lillian and Don Mackie Manchester and Stretford Clarion
Don Mackie, Life Member of the Clarion was a member of the Manchester section for over 60 years, and was, until the last few years Captain and a regular on club runs.
Don was a very popular member, but when his wife Lillian became ill he had to look after her. Lillian died a few months later and since then Don began to deteriorate and died on September 12th 1994.
Don wrote to me after Lillian died:
..."Lillian was well known at Easter Meets and of course Wortley Hall. I must thank all members, the wife called them "the Girls" the way they looked after her on our trips".
Lillian was a pre-war member of the Manchester Clarion and joined the Manchester and Stretford Clarion after 1945, she was also well known the help she gave to the local sheltered housing scheme.
Lillian died on April 17th 1994 aged 77.
Easter Meets may be in Jeopardy
Future Easter Meets may be in jeopardy unless the Clarion can find a new Easter Meet organiser.
Dave Gaffrey, after several years of successful Easter Meets has decided to call ita day. As special pressures of work and home make it difficult for him to continue. The last few Easter Meets have been extremely well run by Dave with particular credit going to him for the Centenary Meet at Lincoln where Dave worked well beyond the call of duty Thanks Dave a hard act to follow!
We need a diligent individual who can plan all aspects of the Easter Meet, liaising with the Racing Secretary and National Secretary. New venues need to be vetted and co-ordinated well in advance. Approximately two day trips will be needed per year to the venues where discussions with Heads of Tourism and the Mayors Secretary will be necessary, as will negotiations to ensure we maintain all conference facilities. Expenses will be paid and support will be given by the committee and officials.
Please don't just read this and forget it, if everybody says someone else will do it, then no one will. the Easter Meet is far too important to suffer, just as it is a major
part of the Clarion’s new growth.
Please contact: Ian Clarke National Secretary.

The National Clarion representative team activities didn’t go as well as I had hoped. We didn't get as many teams out for a number of reasons. Hopefully the few riders that did show interest have not become disillusioned and will stick with us as we try to rectify these problems over the
winter and that we can have a worthwhile 1995 season.
I was a shame for the juvenile team that they were unable to actually race in Clarion Colours. On the first outing Team Manager Colin Armstrong had a vehicle breakdown on the way and inadvertantly failed to transfer the kit.
On the second race (at Carlisle) the person due to take the jersies fell ill the evening before and despite many frantic phone calls we were unable to make alternative arrangements. However, the lads all rode well and all three were placed in the top 3 well done Neil Wallbank (Sunderland), Tom Hemmant (Crewe) and Stuart Ormes (Bolton). Also Michael Burton (Calder) acquitted himself well at Sunderland with Neil and Stuart.
We also had a Senior Team out at the Maltby 2/3 race in Yorkshire. This was in preparation for the Ribble 2 Day, which we unfortunately got our entry back from. The team comprised of Will Sanderson and Duncan Hewitt (Stockport), Carl Price (Sunderland) and Simon Gow (Fenland). Although the lads rode well they were unable to make any impression on the result. Simon punctured and retired, while the others finished in the bunch.
We will be organising a Team Weekend for all of those interested on the weekend of 26the and 27th of November at Aysgarth Falls Youth Hostel in North Yorkshire. The cost will be £16.50 per person (B B Evening meal). The camp will comprise of a ride Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning with a Brainstorming and general discussion on the Saturday night. Anyone interested should send me the full amount now (Cheques payable to National Clarion Racing Team). Anyone wishing to represent the team in 1995, act as a team official or be willing to assist with general team organisation should contact me with a resume of their cycling career to date. Finally, and by no means least, thanks to Manchester and Stretford, Calder, Nottingham and Fenland sections for their financial contributions. We really need funds in order to run the team and make it a worthwhile aspect of the club. If you or your section want to help please send cheques to the address below. (Made payable to National Clarion Racing Team).

Skegness for Next Easter Meet
Back by popular demand, Skegness on the Lincolnshire coast was decided as the 100th Easter Meet venue for the Clarion after Ashbourne (where we had our first) could not cater for us.
From all the Clarion members I have spoken to Skegness seems to come out on top, probably to Llandudno ina close second place. Skegness love us going there so it was an easy decision especially as many of the other resorts are rapidly increasing their conference charges.
So put it in your diary, we will have all the usual events, two time trials and the Road Race used in previous years:

If you know of people who are not near a local Clarion Section then we are always interested to help establish new sections. All we need are three founder members to begin a new section. For further information please ask them to contact the National Clarion Secretary.

Clarion Time-Trial Series Initiative
The Clarion wish to consider a new initiative for a time-trial series, with the intention to provide greater support for Clarion section open timetrials and to encourage more Clarion time-triallists to compete in Clarion section open time-trials in preference to other events.
With a view to a trial series for 19951 wish to hear from Clarion promoters of the following types of event:
Sporting courses, circuits on hillier, quieter routes. Non-standard distances preferred, i.e. not 25, 50 etc.
Good facilities, if riders are to travel some distance to a race then they will need them!
Under-subscribed events.
The series would provide Championship prizes based on points collected throughout the year. Considering the distances between Clarion sections would propose that the series is based on 'best 4 out of 6' or 'best 6 out of 9' counting events.
Points could be awarded as follows:
Solo Senior 1st 30 points, 2nd 29 down to 30th, all other finishers 1 point. Prizes awarded to first three.
Team Ist 3 points, 2nd -2 points, 3rd 1 point. team prize irrelevant of who members are. Prizes awarded to first team
Junior, Lady, and Vet 6 points to 6th one point. Prizes awarded to first in each category.
believe that this initiative will benefit the Clarion greatly bringing sections together to support each others events and encouraging fellowship amongst our members.
Any Volunteers?
It would obviously get off the ground much better if we had a coordinator for the series, do not believe this would be a big job but it would make things run more smoothly. Please let lan Clarke (National Secretary) know if you are interested
