SPRING 1993 NEWSLETTER EASTER MEET PROGRAMME
From the Secretary
Newsletter Editor, Membership Secretary, hard-worked, un-paid, official ...and all-round good chap.
WELL, another year is on us and after all those winter training miles I'm still not as fit as should be!
As many of you will now know have now taken on board of my already over burdened shoulders, the position of Membership Secretary. believe that so far this years membership returns have gone quite smoothly although there are still some sections to send me any Membership Forms back at all. If you are reading this and have not received a yellow membership card and you have paid your subs to your Secretary then ask him or her what is happening. Alternatively call me directly.
Some sections are reluctant to give us full details of members so some of your club mates may not receive this
Clarion
Members Wed
LONG-TIME member Steve Hope and not quite so long-time member Lorna Shonhard both of the Fenland Clarion are due to get married on Saturday 26th June at Folksworth near Peterborough.
Many of you will remember them in the Easter Meet ‘10° at Lilandudno last year on a sit-up and beg tandem.
Congratulations and may you have many Clarionettes.
Newsletter. Ask your friends to make sure that they get one and if they don't then tell us.
Last year there were a few mess-ups on the membership front that were out of my control but now that am both the Membership Secretary and the National Secretary have all the information at my finger tips and you have my promise that Membership Cards and newsletters will be sent and cheques will be banked. After saying all that, it is still very important that Secretaries send me all the members details as shown on the Membership Forms post codes and dates of birth are very important. Remember that once a form is filled out correctly one year all you have to do next year is sign it and send us your money.
Whilst it is pleasing to see Allan Wray stepping forward to take on the role of Racing Secretary it is a shame to see no new nominations for officials and committee members coming forward. Some of the larger Sections not currently represented at National Committee level are: Teesside, Nottingham, Stockport, Sunderland and Clitheroe. So... if you still have any ‘beefs’ about how things are run, then why not take one of the two spare Committee positions for a year or so and put things right.
Allan has taken over from John Leese who has put in many years of effort and will still continue as a Committee Member.
Many good things are happening in the coming year or so, what with the recent formation of a new Section (read later) and this years Easter Meet at
Whitby is certainly a favourite for me. The town is picturesque and interesting with plenty to do for young and old. Unlike many Meet venues Whitby doesn’t have any Lager Lout problems so I'm sure it will appeal to everyone. Just ask someone who has been before.Colin Armstrong of Teesside Clarion is organising a packed programme of time-trials and roadraces. Please note that Easter Meet races may be in the Handbooks under Teesside and not National Clarion. For those of you not racing there are plenty of things to see and do (read later). 1994 sounds exciting with the Centenary year and Meet at Lincoln,
watch this space for more information. So what with all our usual Championship events and meetings throughout the year I’m sure the Clarion’s future is looking rosey. am always pleased to hear from any members with views or ideas and if you need any information or just addresses of long lost Clarion acquaintances please call me. In the mean-time look forward to meeting as many of my Clarion friends throughout the year as possible. lan Clarke, (National Secretary), 18 Sapperton, Werrington, Peterborough, PE4 5BS Tel: 0733 577108
dozen members.
NEW SECTION FORMED
SINCE Colin Armstrong moved to Robin Hoods Bay he has been co-ordinating a number of up and coming riders. In good Clarion tradition, from this, a new Section has now been formed. The first in many, many years.
The new Section is called Bay Clarion Velo and is made up of mainly riders from 12 to 18 years. The Section looks to be strong on both the Track and the Road with other interests in off-road mountain biking. There is already around a
Bay Clarion Velo has separate a Secretary, Treasurer and Social/Touring Secretary. If anyone needs to know, the Secretary is:

1994 Easter Meet
IN 1894 the Clarion Cycling Club began in the Midlands and whilst the first Easter Meet did not take place until 1895 the Centenary of the National Clarion Cycling Club will be next year.
To commemorate this, plans are already afoot by our hardworking David Gaffrey (Easter meet Organiser) and the 1994 Easter Meet will be at LINCOLN.
Lincoln is the home of the National Cycling Museum and has a great history and reputation in the cycling world, with many stages of the Milk Race and Star Trophy events finishing there. Rumour has it, that Lincoln may be planning a Year of Cycling in 1994 and the Clarion could well be kicking it all off with our Centenary year.

THE following are the names and telephone numbers of all Clarion Sections throughout the country. Why not try to organise intersection events, such as club cuns, meeting half way between sections, or interclub time-trials, or invite nearby sections to join your

Junior Squad News
WITH a new team strip the Clarion Junior Team is set to face its first whole racing season. The first event will have by now gone which was a training weekend at Matlock on 6th/7th March.
Rick Clark is very enthusiastic and optimistic about this years future for the Team. He and sports Scientist Chris Roberts together with Gordon Baker our Physio have already met most of this years team.
There will obviously be an on-going process of training (which is also open to
non-team members and Seniors) and race selection and whilst a core of the team will remain there is opportunity for reserves and replacement as riders form
develops.
Please note: There is actually two Teams one Junior and one Juvenile. Any riders interested should contact Rick at the following address:
Rick Clark,
20 Hawkins Drive, Ridgeway, Ambergate, Derbyshire 2JUN.
SECTIONS promoting National Clarion events should at first obtain a copy of the relevant RTTC, BCF or BCCA handbook and familiarise themselves on the rules of promotions.
In most handbooks there is a section dedicated to “Hints for promoters” which you will find essential.
In addition to the governing body’s tules the following applies just to Clarion promotions, which are often part of an open event.
1 Separate the prize lists so that Clarion riders can compete for ist, 2nd, 3rd places against other Clarion riders.
2 Start sheets and programs should state:"For Clarion awards: one rider one medal applies, other than for the Team award.
3 Clarion riders should still be able to compete for overall prizes with’ non- Clarion riders.
4 Consult National Clarion rule book for Medal allocations in each event as medals will only be given as per these rules your Section Secretary has a

copy or contact the National Secretary.
5 All awards shall be awarded at the annual Prize Presentation at the Easter Meet.
6Send a copy of start sheet/programme and especially the results to the Clarion Records Secretary and to the Clarion Racing Secretary also send a copy to the National Secretary so that the results may be included in the Newsletter. Do this within 28 days.
Don’t forget
Please bear in mind that there is a wealth of experience within the Clarion and always plenty of people willing to help you if it is your first time, all you have to do is ask.
You may wish to use your own Sections equipment, but the Clarion has it's own body numbers and marshall’s jackets that can be made available just call the National Secretary.

A short but tough (low gears needed) run from Whitby
by Allan Wray
HERE'S an interesting ride for either racing men looking for a short hard ride, or for touring riders looking to take in some of the scenic delights around Whitby.
The route
Leave Whitby on the A171. Itis a long steady drag with some flats for about 7 miles. Leave the A171 ata sign past EGTON (left). In Egton take second right to go to GLAISDALE via LIMBER HILL. Limber hill is a 1 in 3 at the bottom section with a left-hand 90 deg. bend at the bottom (the river Esk is beyond with only a fence between you and it). Not far from here, on the level bit is a bridge known as BEGGARS BRIDGE. It is actually a pack-horse bridge but the story is that a young man who who was courting a girl who lived on the opposite bank vowed to make his fortune, marry the girl and build a bridge, so that floods etc would not keep any more lovers apart.
Follow the road through GLAISDALE, leaving the ESK far below, and take the right-hand fork
for LEAHOLM, downhill for quite some way. In LEAHOLM there is a Book Shop and some Tea Rooms. Second-hand books fill about 4 or 5 rooms and it is well worth going in for a look. (I was there some time ago and asked about opening times they are always open, they told me!). Cross the river Esk (use the stepping stones if you wish, hence the name of the Book Shop). Up the hill and past some public toilets over Leaholm Rigg where before STONEGATE you have a choice, left to go back via SANDSEND or straight on to go back direct to Whitby on the A171.
If we go back via SANDSEND turn left before STONEGATE to follow that road to reach the A171. Left to turn right for UGTHORPE (just after a caravan site). This road will take you to LYTHE village where a right turn will take you down LYTHE BANK where good brakes will be appreciated.
Through SANDSEND and on to WHITBY. (If you have an ATB you could go on the beach to Whitby if the tide is out!)
Places of Interest
Whitby Museum Has a very good display of Capt. Cook memoribilia. Sounds stuffy but it is not!
Port Mulgrave If you want to see Beleminites and other fossils in the rock. Be warned the climb back up is a lung gasping one!
Robin Hoods Bay Olde worlde charm again very steep into the Bay, cars are parked at the top as it is too narrow to allow visitors to block everything up.
North York Moors Railway Steam from GROSMONT to PICKERING beautiful scenery all the way!
Other than all the activities of the Easter Meet these are all good reasons come to Whitby, ask anyone who has been before and you will find out that WHITBY is a Clarion favourite.
Bi Allan Wray is a member of Calder Clarion and organiser of the last few Clarion Hill Climb championships. Amongst other things Allan is standing for the position of Clarion Racing Secretary at this Easter’s Conference
