A MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL
SECRETARY
It is nearly a year now since took over the role of National Secretary and what a year it has been. Not fully appreciating the amount of work needed to bring the Clarion into the Nineties myself and Trevor Reade (Membership Secretary) hope that the work put in will generate increased awareness and attendance of all events and following that, an up-turn in membership figures.
Notable events of 1991 included Alan and Christine Roberts of Crewe section figuring high in the National time trial scene, with Christine finishing Sth in the Ladies BAR, 7th in the National 12hr and being part of the winning team in the same event together with husband Alan and team mate Roy Hodgkinson with 774 miles between them.
Lindsay Clarke of Fenland Section took a BCF silver medal in the Ladies National 800 metre Grass Track Championships final.
Also taking top honours and amassing some 100 license points was Eric Rigby of the Calder Section finishing high in the Star Trophy series.
An increased awareness of the Clarion has risen from articles in the cycling press with mentions in the Guardian also. Both articles slanted on the Clubs political past but the Clarion of today survives and thrives on the club Camaraderie throughout the country. There is a real feeling of friendship and team spirit which follows our organisation, this is unique within the cycling world and sets us aside from other ordinary cycling clubs ...and this is something to be proud of!
The Club is yours and what you make it, the committee, officials and event organisers are all unpaid volunteers and can only provide what they feel is right. Their reward is thanks and attendance, so please do your bit to attend as many Clarion events possible.
If you have yet to attend an Easter Meet, Llandudno is the best in our circuit.
For the unaware, the weekend does not only consist of the Conference. The conference, albeit important to every member (where all decisions are made about the Clubs future), is only one item of a packed itinerary of events ranging from Audax events to time trials and from Discos to prize presentations... and to fill in the gaps Landudno has plenty to offer including the Great Orme, Cable cars, beach, promenade, all the shows and amusements.
look forward to seeing regular members and first timers, the meet is also open to non-members and hope to see you all at Llandudno, if not then at one of the events throughout the year.
Let us all work together to make the Clarion bigger and better than it is today.
BOOTS SPURS lan Clarke, National Secretary
Myself and the other members of the committee are always open to any suggestions and ideas.
