NATIONAL CLARION
Cycling Club
The Clarion Cycling Club was formed in 1895 after a group of like-minded individuals got together in Birmingham in 1894. It took the Clarion name from
Robert Blatchford's socialist newspaper.
The National Clarion Cycling Club grew during the early 1900s with 8000+ members at one time and with sections all over the UK. Working class people were getting their freedom on bikes in the countryside and the Clarion was spreading the word, and the newspaper, to industrial towns and villages. In those days before most people could own a car, the bike gave freedom and
fellowship... the Clarion thrived.
The National Clarion now has 1900 members in over 30 sections, which makes it one of the bigger cycling clubs in the UK. The Clarion still believes in bicycles giving people freedom: freedom from the motorcar and the stresses of the rat-race, and through cycling we build great friendships, great friends
around the country.
Whether you race, socialise, tour or meet in cafes, the Clarion is a CLUB,
a true club not an association.

WHAT IS THE WEST LOTHIAN CYCLE CIRCUIT?
Linlithgow Community Development Trust, a community-led charity, has ambitious plans to build a 1km trafficfree cycle circuit for everyone to enjoy. With support from the Council, the community, local clubs and national sporting bodies we are focussed on reaching our fundraising goal.
Our overall fundraising goal is to raise £681k. With £312k already committed from West Lothian Council, £344k grants/trusts in the pipeline, and a community fundraising target of £25k, we are working hard to make this project a reality.
This project will give people of all abilities and from all walks of life the chance to become healthier, more confident and happier, and connected with their community and environment. We know cycling has this impact.
Whether it’s used by children learning to ride a bike, people of all ages enjoying cycling on a safe trafficfree road, people with disabilities mastering the joy of riding an adapted bike or handcycle, or determined
cyclists and paracyclists with their sights on sporting ambitions, the West Lothian Cycle Circuit will bring sport for change.
ABOUT THE CYCLE CIRCUIT
Based in Scotland's central belt, Linlithgow is within 50 miles of two thirds of Scotland’s population. This circuit has the potential to help Scotland become a cycling nation.
The closed road cycle circuit will be designed for easy access, suitable for all abilities including adaptive cycles and handcycles, as well as runners.
Two thousand people will benefit from this facility every year, with 25,000 visits per year.
The West Lothian Clarion Cycle Club, one of the most active cycle clubs in the UK and recognised for its ongoing work to develop the club, high class coaching and the achievements of its members, will be key users of the cycle circuit.
The cycle circuit is the first phase of a project that will see future development, including a skatepark, pump track and athletics track and field facility alongside the cycle circuit.
