Very special offer
from Italian Clarion
Italian Clarion is a new Section (the first outside the UK) based in Piemonte, North West Italy. The Alps are to the north and west, the Ligurian coast to the south and we're in the region of Asti, just south of Torino.
The area is famous for: Fausto Coppi; Ferrero Rocher; truffles; Barbaresco and Barolo wines, and the popular Asti Spumante wine.
This is an undiscovered part of Tuscany and is arguably better than Toscana, as it's cheaper. A two-hour ride takes you into the Alps and some fantastic climbs that are worth
trying to conquer. Italian Clarion is also a tour business offering guided cycling trips. If you
like riding on the flat, in rotting hills or in mountains, we've got it all here in Piemonte we'll do our best to cater to your needs.
We're keen to build our business so, in true Clarion spirit, we are offering free accommodation to Clarion members staying at our Montafia base. You just need to book your own flights and contribute to any food and drink costs, plus any airport transfers.
With the Giro d'ltalia starting in Torino in 2011, it's a great excuse to experience the area first hand!
See www. italianclarion.com or contact us at italianclarion@ hotmail.co.uk. Offer ends July 2011.

Didn't we do well?
oots! When Winter rolls around (too quickly) it’s time to hang up the summer bike and reflect on the season’s achievements races raced, places visited, people met.
We've all got our goals, on and off the bike, and the Clarion is no different to grow our membership and to spread the Clarion way. In drawing together the stories, statistics and news for this issue of Boots Spurs, it was Brucie’s famous catchphrase (paraphrased) that sprang to mind ‘Didn’t we do well?’
Over the last year, new Sections have been formed, we’re competing in each others’ Section events and doing battle in the National Championships. The Autumn meet made welcome return and we've dramatically grown and diversified our membership. These are huge achievements.
From tips on touring to race reports, from World Champions to World Record Holders, the Clarion’s got it all, as seen in this issue.
We've all got a role to play in future Clarion success please spread the word we’re unique, we’re inclusive and we’re on the up!
I'll be celebrating the Clarion story, in style, at next year’s Easter Meet and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible Spurs!

Perhaps reflecting the tastes of our initial membership, we have established our club as one that puts on rides for people who enjoy cycling but are often deterred by (for them) the demands of groups infinitely more ambitious than ours in terms of speeds and mileages.
As readers of our ride reports will see (check them out at www.brightonandhove -clarion.org.uk) we enjoy exploring the countryside, having a pint and a pub lunch while discussing the events of the day serious and otherwise as much as the cycling itself, or rather, as an integral part of the cycling.

West Lothian Clarion’s young riders did well overall. In the under-8s boys, the top three spots were Clarion riders Sam Chisholm, Andrew Turner and Findlay Gilmour. In the under-10s boys’ and girls’ races, Alex Ball and Beth Pollard both came second. Cameron Mason was second placed boy in the under-12s. Fastest rider Arthur Doyle said, ‘It was great to go to this

time we’ve all been able to compete in the same event. The kids (7 and 10) want to go back and do it again already!’
Roll on next year.
FENLAND GIVE IT AGO-RIDE!
The Fenland Clarion started a junior Go-Ride section in May 2010, aided by a grant of £250 from the National Clarion, with the aim of attracting and developing younger riders.
After a brief recruitment drive Fenland have gained 15 keen young cyclists, coached under the watchful eye of Sharon Smith and Malc Jacklin.
‘Over the summer, we covered a variety of fun activities that helped the riders learn basic skills.
During winter, we will meet either for a small group ride or for Go-Ride racing, which our regional coach has organised at the local country park,’ says Sharon. ‘Our success over the last few months has been amazing, with some of our riders even winning first place in Local events. We hope to grow even more over the next year, with plans for a grass track series and closer links to our local schools.’

Five Tips for Touring with Kids
Neil and Julie Greer have toured far and wide, from the Outer Hebrides to Salzburg and Budapest, but taking their children aged 11 and nine along for the first time presented new challenges. Here's what they learned:
Get them involved in the planning Scour the maps together, let the kids search the internet for B&Bs, take them to try out their new tent, give them some gadgets; it adds to the sense of adventure and to it being their holiday, too. Make it interesting, with lots of variety The last thing parents want to hear is, ‘I’m bored...’, but ploughing along a straight flat road for 20 miles will definitely illicit that response! Country lanes, farm tracks, towpaths, ferries, trains, high
From left: Morven, Calum and Julie take a break
passes, beaches, rivers and lochs will create a real sense of travel that they won’t forget. Don’t skimp on gear Inevitably the weather will be too hot/cold/wet/ windy at some stage. Ensure the kids’ gearis as good as yours; no-one wantsa rain jacket that either leaks or is of the ‘boil-in-the-bag’ variety! Don't obsess about mileage Remember, it’s about the journey, not the destination. Children need to be praised for their efforts, even if, that day, you have only gone ten miles (they may have seena golden eagle soar above ora gannet plunge for its lunch). And rest days are vital.
Stop frequently and let
them enjoy their newly discovered environment Nothing will turn the kids off more than being pushed too hard. Feed and water them frequently, give them their own ‘stash’ of goodies on their bike, and tune in to the things they see and hear. Trip details The Greers trip took in the islands of Arran and Islay, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, and back to Mid Lothian over the Forth Road Bridge. Five ferry crossings helped in their 330-mile, 15-day trip. Average mileage was 30 miles a day, at c.11 mph. The verdict: ‘Fantastic!’

The Isle of Man is full of surprises
lan Clarke caught up with old friends on a family holiday
hen I joined the National Committee (at the age of 17), Marian Lamb was the Secretary, Brian Nightingale the President, and our National Treasurer was David Bailey. Not the famous photographer, but a member of the Clitheroe Clarion. Our paths never crossed at a Committee meeting, so I never met him face to face.
Fast forward nearly thirty years, and Jayne, Monty and I were off to the Isle of Man for a holiday, bikes on the roof rack and full of hope for fine weather. We'd booked a small converted barn about three miles north of Peel on the west coast of the island.
On the first day, the weather was cloudy, but the roads were dry so I decided to head for the TT circuit and go over the famous ‘mountain road’. Great riding with a long, almost Alpine-esque climb into the

I'd forgotten to take food so I stopped at a shop for an Eccles cake, and while stuffing my face a rider passed and we exchanged greetings. I hopped back on my bike, and, fuelled with currants, passed the rider and headed for Peel. Stopping at ajunction to look at my map, the rider caught me up and stopped. ‘Which Clarion section are youin?’ asked, having noticed the jersey. After explaining I was in Fenland but also the National Secretary, he introduced himself ‘the’ David Bailey. What a small world!

25 TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
By Matthew Ball WEST LOTHIAN he 25 TT is the Clarion’s Blue Riband event and this year it was organised by Nottingham. The race followed a lumpy route along twisty B roads and two very fast sections on the A52.
West Lothian is a long way from Nottingham but it was worth the journey and I enjoyed catching up with my Clarion pals. The home bakes were plentiful and the tea reviving. Nottinghamshire isa lovely part of the world and Francis Grafton, the race organiser, says it’s good touring country.
Next time I’ll stay longer, and get achance to sample some of the local brews...

Did an old fashioned saddle bag tour of Derbyshire prove a winner? Find out how one Clarionista got on
By David Mitchell NORTH CHESHIRE n October Friday saw me loaded up with a bulging ‘Longflap’ and my mind focused on the 60-mile ride to Ilam Youth Hostel in the Peak District. My first hour followed the familiar Cheshire Cat sportive route. Ithen headed up the Roach Valley and joined the Morridge, a high, rolling route along the moors overlooking Leek. Sweeping downhill for nearly 10 miles, Isoon reached Waterhouses and onto the climb into the Manifold Valley, finally reaching the Ilam hostel some five hours later. What hostel: four starandina castle! [soon found other Clarionistas before dining on local lamb and black pudding casserole, followed by toffee pudding and double cream: it was just as well I didn’t come in the car! On Saturday, 14 of us embarked ona short, hilly 42-miler that sought out all the ‘arrowed’ hills the area. There was alsoa

We refuelled with Bakewell tart and custard in Hartington before passing another 4* hostel out of the village next year’s venue perhaps? A final climb through Thorpe before breathtaking descent back to Ilam and up the sweeping drive to our stately home cum hostel for a shower and a beer.

We signed on and stripped our bikes down then headed back to the start. Waiting for the off, the sun was nicely warm, and witha heave and acheery ‘Good luck’, I was away. I settled into fast and strong pedalling, winding up through the trees to clapping from spectators along the route. Emerging into the sun again, my minute-man passed me gasping encouragement, Ithen heard cheers of encouragement from my fellow weekend Clarionistas Iseemed to be holding the man who had passed me.
On the flattening grade I managed to change up and started to concentrate on the last half mile. In front, car had slowed to pass one coming down the hill. Isaw a gap up the near side and decided to go for it commuter style. The adrenalin lasted another 100 yards but then fatigue caught up as I made a final effort for the line. No repeat of my three second margin on Andy Horner this time (the summer Bury hill climb) he was 20 seconds better, but did have a super light bike and no mudguards!
With the excitement over Ireturned to Cheshire with Ian from Stockport Clarion, passing Chatsworth House and following the main road to Chapel en le Frith. Not the quietest of routes, but the gradients were kinder on our legs. Down to Whaley Bridge before tackling Kettleshulme then over the top to Pott Shrigley, Adlington, Wilmslow and home, passing over the Manchester Ship Canal just as the sun set. A strenuous weekend’s cycling in good Clarion company.

WHAT'S NEW IN
Bolton
The big Bolton news is that Fred Smith improved on his Silver of last year to win the Men’s 70+ Pursuit Title at the European Masters Championships held in Manchester.
In the first round, Fred displayed professional riding and disciplined pacing to guarantee aplace for the Gold Medal ride off. Later, in the final, he again displayed the same patience, refusing to be deviated from his target pace. But in the last two laps the race was getting very close, with Derek Woodings drawing level. Fred’s fans gave shouts of encouragement and Fred responded in magnificent fashion, digging deep on the drops to producea sprint finish to take the title.

Our rides are not always just rides from A to B (or rather, Ato A, as most are circular); often there is some focus, such as an old church, a village festival, oran interesting feature such windmill.

Nottingham Clarion do in the form ofa yellow American school bus dubbed the ‘Cool Bus’! story fora Club that, despite a proud history, had suffered a period in the doldrums before its recent renewed life. The Club now hasa regular programme of weekly events, with Go-Ride, club time-trials, social events and club runs. Over 50 riders have taken part in this season's 10 TT championship.
The Go-Ride scheme has been particularly successful, with weekly events at Holme Pierrepoint, Nottingham’s National Watersports Centre, under the watchful eyes of our newly-trained and accredited Club coaches. We have introduced some of the Go-Riders to the competitive side of cycling, taking part in local youth races. Our hope is that
Nottingham's 'Cool Bus' is top class
some of these riders become regular cyclists, stay with the Club, learn more about the National Clarion and its history, and become involved.
We now base most of our activities and social events on the outskirts of Nottingham, at the Lime Kiln Pub near the village of Cropwell Bishop. This gives us access to the Vale of Belvoir, which isa great area for cycling, with a network of relatively traffic free lanes crossing open countryside. Many ofour club runs head out that way and our club time trial courses are based on these lanes.

The MTB section now has regular crosscountry and trail rides, including series of mid-week rides that ran until the clocks changed. Thirteen riders competed in the midweek 8.75 TT series, with Sarah Smith taking the ‘most improved’ crown over the season and David Mitchell the fastest time of 22:40. Anthony Mycock secured the inaugural BAR for North Cheshire, showing particular mettle in the later10 TTs of the season, with a 24:04 on the famous Rainford D10/1 course. Giles Perkins and David Mitchell rode in the Bury summer hill-

Six riders completed the Seasons of the Mist Audax (Hebden Bridge, Burnley, Waddington, Dunsop Bridge, Slaidburn, Nelson, Hebden Bridge). A challenging ride at the best of times, the absolutely appalling conditions made for significant pride for all who completed it. Ade Hughes and Anthony Mycock completed the Tan Hill Challenge, a 200km Audaxin North Yorkshire, both receiving their Randonneur Badges.
Preparations are also in full swing for the inaugural Annual Dinner in January, at which former British sprint champion and. record holder Denise Hampson will be guest speaker.
