HAPPY NEW YEAR
We are on the brink of a major breakthrough, no this isn’t the latest Bosnian peace talks this is the
National Clarion Cycling Club. Last year I saw (as I am sure have quite a few mem-
bers) a number of significant milestones in the club’s history.
Beginning with the National Clarion Team who’d have thought after setting up the National Clarion Team a few years ago idea pioneered by the Coughlan’s in the Stockport Clarion credit where credit’s due!) that we could have such a strong team as we do have. Not only do we have a strong team of first category road men and women! But we also entered a team in the Manchester Leg of the Sky TV Grand Prix Series. This is no small feat, there was an extremely strong field, the best in the country. Okay so we got a bit trounced but the lads did us proud and were great ambassadors for the club.
We held the National Clarion Track Champs for the first time at the Manchester Velodrome in August. Thanks go to Graham Pearce of the Stockport Clarion who organised things and we had a good turn out from more sections than usual. Graham has already said he will do the honours again next year so let’s hope more of you turn out, it’s a very nice track and even the weather doesn’t affect things.
It doesn’t end with racing though, last year we changed the programme of the Wortley Hall weekend and we had nearly 75 people wanting to come. Unfortunately only 55 could be accommodated so the others stopped locally. This year we'll make sure there’s room for all of you.
The addition of planned(ish!) rides on the Saturday and the roller racing seemed to be appreciated and we hope to expand on this year. A number of people said that they’d like to come on the Friday night so we’ll provide that option and give people more time to take in some nice riding country. Also proposed is a Friday night talent contest, or should we say there will be ‘entertainment provided by the members’.
Wrap up warm, keep dry, keep fit, keep happy and keep riding the bike this winter.
See you soon or before. Boots Spurs

Thanks Brian and Anne
Thanks to Brian and Anne Burchell for organising the Wortley Hall weekend and especially the Slide quiz which was a huge success and entertainment for all who took part. We now know everything there is to know about Norway, trains and dried fish.
Hoyle does P.B.P.
Chris Hoyle of the Bolton section successfully completed the AUDAX event Paris-Brest-Paris event of 750 miles in 86 hours. The limit was 90 hours and Chris paced himself with a well calculated schedule with regular sleep rather than the do or die efforts of some riders who prefer to ride without sleep.
Clarion Cafe
The Clarion Cafe is at the Pump House People History Museum Left Bank, Bridge Street, Manchester M3 3ER. It’s open 8.00 to 4.30 Monday to Friday and 11,00 to 4.30 Saturday and Sunday.
Team Clarion funded by donations
Many sections and individuals have already contributed to the success of the racing ‘flag ship’ Team Clarion by sending donations, thanks to everyone who has done so.
Moneys are used for travelling expenses and entry fees and only go a short but appreciative way towards the ‘real’ running costs of a team of this calibre. The rest comes from hidden expenses from Team Manager and riders themselves who want to remain part of the Clarion and compete at a high level. Further donations should be sent to Steve Clarke see Team Clarion news and plans in this newsletter.

Fellowship is Life.
by Denis Pye
I can certainly recommend this book to any member or any one interested in cycling clubs. Written by the Clarion’s Minutes Secretary the book is extremely well researched well written and entertaining. I thought I understood a bit about the background of the Clarion, but now I know much more than ever.
A brief extract:
“\.and the secretary of the Darlington CCC complained in the summer of that year that propaganda work was being prevented by some members who only wanted to ride long distances and break records........
That year was 1896 only one year after the first Easter Meet.
If you really want to know what the Clarion was all about, right up to last year, then this will certainly prove exceptional reading. This book is, and will be, the Clarion History book for many years to come and the next chapter will probably be written in 50 years time.
Why not buy a club mate one for a Christmas present? £4.95 [ISBN 0 9525071 0 2] or order through the National Secretary or from Denis whose name is in the officials list.

Brian Ferry
Brian Ferry possibly the most famous ex-Clarion member?
Yes, my rumour was confirmed at the Easter Meet by members of the Sunderland Clarion. Successful pop star Brian Ferry was once a member of the Houghton Le Spring Clarion. His first disc award was given to the club and adorned their club room wall for some time.
Could hits such as “Street Life”, “Sign of the Times” and “These Foolish Things” have been inspired by time trialling?
Do you know of anyone more famous that has been in the Clarion? let us know.
Motions to Conference
Forms for motions to conference have been sent to your section That includes motions by National Committee. Copies of motions will then be sent to sections for amendments.
Final agendas will be circulated to sections prior to the Easter Meet, section meetings should decide how to vote at conference and then appoint and instruct that delegate on how to vote.
Voting for motions shall be by card vote based on 1 vote for each 5 members as at 7 days prior to conference.
For full details please refer to a copy of the “National Clarion Cycling Club Constitution and Rules” ref: VERS90.doc. A copy is available on request to the National Secretary.

Obituary
Jo Hoban, life member of the Calder and National Clarion Cycling Club passed away on the 9th of June this year. Jo was known outside the Clarion as father of Tour de France
rider Barry, but well known throughout the National Clarion during his long membership. He will be sadly missed and well remembered by all who knew him:

“Fellowship is Life’’
Further on in the debate, the national committee has decided to propose a motion declaring the club motto as: “Fellowship is Life”. If you feel strongly about this then you need to propose an amendment to the resolution before the papers go to conference. Then you need to make sure that you attend conference at the Easter Meet and get your nominated delegate to propose the amendment for all to vote on.
Remember the Clarion is a democratic organisation, so you can all have a say and an influence on the operation and rules. A copy of the rules and constitution are available on request.
BOOTS SPURS
We hope you like the new look Clarion newsletter and welcome your comments and of course contributions.
This new style is the first development that will hopefully see the magazine increase in physical to A4 and gain a full colour cover. The idea is that Boots Spurs will be a vehicle for promoting the team and it’s sponsors. Obviously the bulk of the copy will still be about the club generally and a valuable source of information for all members.
National Secretary, Ian Clarke is currently the editor and would be interested to hear from anyone interested in taking over this post.
We would also welcome persons who could write articles and reports or sell advertising. Budding photographers can also send in pictures for inclusion.
Finally if you know of anyone or any company who might be interested in advertising in the publication, get them to contact Steve Clarke (01733 331500) for further information.

The next issue will incorporate the Easter Meet programme and contributions, letters and photos should be with us by the end of February.

EASTERMEET ‘96
EASTER MEET 1996 Liandudno
Where Snowdonia meets the sea...
This years Easter Meet will be at Llandudno in North Wales, the dates for Easter this year are Friday 5th April until Monday 8th April. The Headquarters for all three nights will be the Imperial Hotel on the Promenade.
Llandudno is where Snowdonia meets the sea and is in the opinion of our National Secretary the best Easter Meet venue we use. It’s close to Anglesey and there’s gorgeous scenery, the Great Orme, trams, cable cars, the Victorian pier and much, much more.
The usual activities will take place opening with the Civic Reception on Friday evening with the Mayor of Llandudno, Councillor Evans in attendance. There will be a Welsh Choir, Harpist and a Buffet. Saturday morning sees the Conference while Saturday evening we have a Fancy Dress and Disco. Sunday evening is a Dance and Annual Prize Presentation.
On the Racing front there are two time trials with the Kenneth Humphreys 25 mile on the Sunday and the Bert Brown 10 mile on the Monday. Both Time Trials will be held on the Abergele to St Athan road, less than 10 miles from Llandudno. Nearby (near Wrexham about 45 minutes away) there is a Two Day being organised for E/1/2/3
riders and they will accept teams from Clarion sections and the Skegness Trophy will be awarded to the best Clarion rider in this event. Accommodation details have been sent to section secretaries but if you need one please contact head office (01733 577108)

THE CLARION
So, what’s it all about?
You may have already heard a little about the Clarion Cycling Club, perhaps you’ve met a few long term members, perhaps you’ve read a few articles, maybe you’ve been in the Clarion for a short while but haven’t found out much about the Club. So, read on, I hope to tell you a little about the Clarion.
Clarion more than
aname...
The Clarion Cycling Club took it’s name from a newspaper, “The Clarion” first published in 1891 by Robert Blachford to preach Socialist politics. The paper quickly gained a huge following throughout Britain including Tom Groom one of our founders.
The Club was originally named the Socialists Cycling Club at our inaugural meeting where six like minded friends met on February 26th 1894 in a former Methodists Chapel in Birmingham to discuss how to mix the pleasures of cycling with the spreading of the Socialist message. This name was rescinded at the second meeting in favour of the Clarion name.
From one Clarion club in
Birmingham to...
Tom Groom wrote articles for the Clarion paper about the club’s rides. By the end of 1894 his

THE CLARION
enthusiasm had spread to Hanley in Staff’s to Liverpool and Bradford, by Easter 1895 there were 12 sections represented at the first Easter Meet in Ashbourne where the National Clarion Cycling Club was established.
And what about today?
Today there are 18 sections with nearly 500 members. Our sections are as far South as London and as far North as Glasgow. Not quite the hazy days in the early part of the century when we had several thousand members but for today we are now increasing our membership once again.
So what happens in
the Clarion?
First consider that as a Clarion member you are in the same club as any other member whose section maybe perhaps 200 miles away. This alone brings great fellowship and can often help when touring afar or racing in another district. The advantages can be as simple as a bed for the night or a lead out in a road race.
There are many occasions where we get together with our fellow Clarion members sometimes to ride together, sometimes to race as one team, sometimes to compete against each other for Clarion championships. But often to share a pint, a story or a memory.
The Clarion year begins with the annual Easter Meet, traditionally based around the conference where rules are made and changed but also a social and racing weekend. Couple this with dances and entertainment at a different resort each year and we have an excellent start to the season.
Throughout the year are numerous racing championships, Road Race, 25 mile TT, Track championships, Hill climb championships and the

THE CLARION,
more than just a cycling club
Cyclo-cross championships.
Most of these have awarded trophies, some for ladies only and even for tandems.
At the close of the season we have the annual Wortley Hall weekend. Wortley, at a ‘Stately’ home north of Sheffield is the venue for a social get together and combines good riding country with the Hill climb champs and socialising.
Our annual prize presentation is always at the Easter meet for the year previous, prizes are presented often by the mayor of the town not only for Championships but also for Best All-Rounder competitions, best section, Clubman and Clubgirl awards plus many others.
A ‘Clarion call’
Boots and Spurs
You may have already heard someone shout ‘boots’ and in return someone replies ‘spurs’. The history of this comes from Robert Blachford’s army days where ‘spinners’ of ‘yarns’ would call ‘boots’ whilst telling late night stories in the dorms’. If anyone was still awake they’d reply ‘spurs’, the story would continue.
This call sign was adopted by early clarion members as a method of telling if cyclists nearing a meeting were also members, they’d call ‘boots’ and if they heard the correct reply they knew that the cyclist also read the Clarion paper. It’s a call that is still used today.
So what does it cost me?
Usually, roughly a half of your section membership (or half the price of good handlebar tape!) goes to National Office. This pays for all trophies and medals, sometimes subsidises the Easter Meet (not last year!), pays for conference and committee expenses, National Office expenses and two newsletters a year direct to your door.
Tell me more...
There is a lot more to know about the Clarion and a few ways to find our about it. If you just want to be informed ensure that your name and address is sent by your secretary to the National Secretary. This will ensure you receive info’ about the events and dates. For first hand experience come to the Easter Meet of any other Clarion event. If you wish to know more about the history of the Clarion get hold of a copy of “FELLOWSHIP IS LIFE” by Denis Pye [ISBN 0 9525071 0 2] released in 1995 and covering the 100 year history of our club.
The Clarion
Remember, this is a great club which extends much further than your own section. Take advantage of it, into our second century, come along, take part and enjoy the fellowship of the National Clarion Cycling Club.

DEREK HODGINS
JANUARY 1996
SUPER VETERAN
Derek, Hodgins, a legend, a true Clarionette, a clubman and a better racer than most of us will ever be, or have ever been. Your editor took time out of his busy schedule to interview this erstwhile
stalwart during a short break in Derek’s even busier schedule, to ask a few questions about the man behind those tri-bars.
IC Derek, when did you begin racing?
DH About six years ago after I finished work.
IC Did you race before?
DH Yes, when I was a kid, I joined in 1947 with Harold Lamb’s Stretford Clarion.....with Johnny Clayton and John Bacon, we were a good Clarion team in those days (and we’re not now? ed.). I rode with my brother Frank.
DH My dad was Clarion Track champion in 1922, I last raced then in 1953 then... in 1989 I was 18 stone when I retired from work and I took up riding to lose weight.
IC Did you smoke then?
DH No I have never smoked (mind you he steams a bit after a race!) and in my first season back I did a 1.10 (25) and every event, I did a PB and got down to a 1.00.
IC What would you class as your best ever ride? DH I think the hour record,... and probably the final yesterday (that was when Derek took silver in the age related pursuit of the World Masters Challenge at Manchester. ed.).
IC ...and what aspect of the sport do you like best? DH I prefer time trialling...well I just enjoy riding the bike, you know, Harold Lamb took me on my first Club run when I was 14.
IC What do you think of the Clarion?
DH [ll never leave the Clarion, I believe in one man one club and I’ve been to many Easter Meets and I’ve had a lot of pleasure in the Clarion. Mind you I’m losing 4 team medals (National) a year by
not joining another club.
IC So how much longer?
DH Till me legs fall off.
IC ....and how does it compare to golf?
DH This is more for my aggressive nature, this is better than golf. My aggression comes out when I’m on my bike....
J think at Stockport, we have a young profile, now that this tracks opened up we’re going to have a bloody good track team.
IC What do you think of touring?
DH Id prefer to be a tourist but racing gets in the way!
Now this track’s open we’re going to have a bloody good
track team...
1G) eee and what would you change about the Clarion?
DH I would try to get more tourists involved, I think even many of the racing lads would love to have something going.
IC So what do you think of the political history of the Clarion?
DH When I was 14 I posted Soviet Weekly for Harold Lamb when I joined the Clarion,.... ’'m not politically minded, I couldn’t care less, I like the people.
This interview was taken whilst Derek was warming up on his Turbo trainer at Manchester Velodrome during the World Masters Challenge.

TEAM CLARION
JANUARY 1996
FIRST ‘WIN’ FOR
TEAM CLARION
1995 Saw Team Clarion score their first team ‘victory’, when the second cat’ trio of Sunderland’s Ian Taylor and Carl Price as well as Stockport’s Duncan Hewitt, conquered all in the Ribble Valley 2 Day, near Preston in mid August. Sadly however and despite the fact the entry criteria was for teams of three, there was no actual team prize.
After a poor start in the opening road stage, the lads pulled back with a good ride in the team time trial on the Saturday afternoon and were just 12 seconds off third spot over the six and a half mile stage.
In the third and. final stage all three riders rode with determination ona very tough, almost mountainous circuit. Carl was the team’s turned out best, finishing in the lead group, good enough for 16th overall. Ian was next in 20th with Duncan just behind in 24th place.
In the VC Taunton 2 Stage Will Sanderson (Stockport) finished third overall with 6th in the TT and 2nd on the road stage, while Carl Price took 15th overall’ The previous evening Price was 6th in the Bath 1/2/3 Circuit Race while Lindsay Clarke (Fenland) was the best lady.
In the first event of the year, the Rockingham Forest 2 day crashes prevented Will Sanderson and Tim Duckett (Fenland) from performing better. While Ian Taylor was left wanting after just getting over the flu’. The only highlight in this race was Lindsay’s 2nd overall in the Ladies competition, behind the promoting club’s Maria Lawrence.
The Grantham Road Race in May saw some spirited riding from Carl Price who made the race winning move helped by some good team work. Sadly Carl blew with one lap to go and limped home just behind the main pack. However Will
Sanderson took the first two lap primes, as the Clarion made their presence known.Midway through the season Will Sanderson, Graeme Wardale (Sunderland) and Tim Duckett gained first category status and this meant a rethink on the race front as half National Clarion team had moved up a league.
Team Clarion turned out for the Manchester Grand Prix (final round of the Sky TV Series, incorporating the British Pro’ Champs.) and although some thought the team would be hopelessly outclassed and humiliated this was far from how it turned out.
We were congratulated by Sport for TV on our team’s ‘professionalism’ and the team of Carl Price, Will Sanderson, Duncan Hewitt and Simon Gow (Fenland) all lasted to about half distance, with plenty of pro’s and international riders falling by the wayside earlier. As planned it was a useful and enjoyable experience for the whole team and especially pleasing to see quite a few Clarion ‘supporters’ cheering the lads on.The final race of the year was the tough 1/2/3 Harleston 2 Day in Norfolk. Again the race was for experience, and what an experience it turned out to be. With riders like Gary Baker, John Charlesworth and Jeff Wright it was-never going to be easy.
After the wet prologue followed a very miserable 80 mile road stage and the conditions meant that were around 80 punctures, with all three service cars running out of wheels. Our boys had their share with six punctures to, mend that evening. Sunday was much better, weatherwise and all the lads recovered well from the previous days efforts and after nearly 190 miles of racing against the big boys Graeme Wardale was our best finisher in 28th spot, Simon Gow finished 36th and Tim Duckett 42nd, all this from 80 starters.

1996 Plans
This year we hope to build on the progress made last season and team manager Steve Clarke hopes to have the team out once or twice per month. We will be riding some short stage races and some one day events. Steve hopes the riders will make further improvements and if they do then he plans to tackle a few more Sky TV crits and possibly the team will make it’s Premier Calendar debut (for experience)
There will be a full programme listed in the next issue of Boots Spurs
New Boys
1996 will see two new riders on the team, Stuart Bowering (Calder) and Dave Langlands (Fenland).
Stuart has spent the last two seasons racing in Holland riding most of the Dutch Belgian Classics and mixing it with the likes of World Champ Danny Nelisen.
Dave however is a relative newcomer to cycling and 1995 was his first season and gained his first cat status on the road and track. The team will be looking to Dave for good prologue results after he produced a 4.55.00 Pursuit at his first attempt.
Help Wanted
As usual help is needed with the team organisation and all kinds of ways. We could really do with a press officer and also a fund raiser. We also need persons to act as team officials at events, mechanics, masseurs and managers.
It costs a lot to get the team on the road and to events and our aim is to make it so that it costs nothing for the riders to be on the team. We are a long way off this yet and therefore rely on sponsorships and donations from sections and individuals. If you can help by sending us a few quid or by organising a fund raising event we’d be really grateful. Cheque should be sent to Steve Clarke, 1026 Lincoln Road Peterborough PE4 6AS. Tel: 01733 575421. Cheques payable to: National Clarion Racing Team.
TEAM CLARION
Sponsors Needed
Do you know of anyone or any company who might be interested in being a Team sponsor? We can offer good coverage and exposure at a very reasonable cost. Advertising in return for goods or services is also a possibility. Are you a Clarion member in business? Call us now for a presentation pack.
What No Juniors!
Sadly at the moment this is the case. Unfortunately there’s neither the money nor the manpower to organise the few youngsters we have. If we had a few more people who wanted to get involved in the team management we could get something going in this area.
So at the moment we are concentrating on getting the senior squad right and endeavouring to make Team Clarion a real target for the youngsters and aspiring riders.
We have riders like Neil Wallbank (Sunderland) who'll be a senior in 1997 and Simon Davison (Teesside) who will be a senior this season, Both could make the team soon.
Think yow’re good enough!
Then contact Steve Clarke on 01733 575421 and tell him. He’s always on the lookout for good riders. Prospects should not only be fast, talented, tough and determined but should also be club spirited, this is essential. Clarke is trying to encourage the youth of today to be lifelong Clarion members and not to go off and join VC Fastpants down the road, never to be seen again.
If you want to know more about Team Clarion you can contact Steve Clarke (Team Manager) at 1026 Lincoln Road, Peterborough PE4 6AS

Stephen Woodrup of Yorkshire Clarion (and Woodrup Cycles) was the second highest Clarion rider with an average of 23.406mph.
Meanwhile Lindsay Clarke (Fenland) was
selected to represent Great Britain in a high profile stage race in Japan the women’s international road race series starting in Tokyo and finishing in Osaka. Lindsay finished a very credible 7th beating many top riders including Kathy Watt Olympic Gold medalist.
Graham Pearce (Stockport) won this years roller racing omnium at the Wortley Hall weekend. A large crowd watched in awe as the Stockport rider and his team out pedalled and out drunk the opposition.

Claims for Clubman and Clubgirl of the year Have a think back, who, in your section (or indeed other sections!) do you know that unselfishly puts more into the Clarion than they take out.
It may be relentless administration behind the scenes, it may be making teas for the racing lads and lasses, it may be encouragement of new members, whatever. If you think you know of one of those members then write a few words on the forms sent to your secretaries and propose them for this National award.
...it may even give them the encouragement to keep it going for a short while longer!
Claims for Section of the year
This award is often under subscribed as most sections find it difficult to believe that they can compete with the professional presentation skills of the Fenland Section. Well I have news for you, it’s only the National Secretary that is so shallow that he doesn’t look beyond laser printed documents. The rest of the committee take this award seriously, so to make it easier and fairer we (well that’s me!) have produced a form (yes, on a laser printer!) that will be sent to all sections in good time to send in your claims.
Please make the effort, size is not necessarily important. (membership numbers, that is!).
Don’t forget to make your claim today.
Claims are to be sent to:

JANUARY 1996
My vision for 1996 is very ambitious yet achievable, I wish to enter a National Clarion Team in the 1996 World Masters Track Challenge. This year Derek Hodgins led the Clarion entrants as a silver medal winner whilst riding in his own Stockport Clarion Colours, other riders included myself and Peter Smith of the Teesside Clarion. Absent potential medal winners included 30 somethings, Lindsay Clarke and Dave Langlands of the Fenland Clarion.
My plan would be for all Clarion riders who wish to enter as part of the team to be sponsored for this International meeting. Sponsorship would be organised by myself and would, at the very least, provide skinsuits and track centre wear.
Ir is expected that the event would be televised to a World audience following the success of this year’s Challenge. This would be an ideal stage to promote the Clarion name.
I hope to get enough riders together to have a team big enough to be wearing the majority of
WORLD MASTERS TRACK CHALLENGE 1996
WORLD MASTERS TRACK CHALLENGE
team colours from any British (or even international team) including the BCF.
I seriously believe that we have the riders and potential to win in excess of three world medals and wish to give all willing riders (not only of medal winning ability) the opportunity to ride for the National Clarion at this prestigious event. So, if you are over 30, and a competent trackie (Colin Armstrong start training!), and wish to help me achieve my vision for 1996 please drop me a line. If you are interested but have little or no track experience and think you can turn your skills to pursuiting, track training can be organised.
