liz McHugh fund raising event
Liz aimed to raise £2000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association by running the London Marathon. She finished the event in 4 hours 18 minutes more or less unscathed, with the exception of a few black toenails and blisters which were expertly treated at the scene by the St John’s Ambulance. i Liz wishes to thank all those who helped her in raising the money and says she was overwhelmed by the generosity and encouragement of her supporters who
took her total to £4500.
Fditorial...
OK, the season nearly over, Wortley hall beckons and the “cross” tyres are being thought about! Has it all been worthwhile? Well, yes of course it has. This year I have achieved a lifetime personal best in 10 and 25 timetrials. Not noteworthy times to anyone other than myself, but that is after all, the true spirit of timetrialling.
The big event in this issue of ‘Boots’ is the updating of the National Clarion rules. The proposed new rules indicating where changes have been made are reproduced in this issue and I’m sure everyone will want their opinion noted. Controversy could reign all year over this one!
Below are the changes to National Clarion Cycling Club Constitution and Rules (Version 13.0) unanimously agreed by those present at the sub-committee meeting held at Oakhill College on Saturday, March Ist 2003. This is the first draft of a document which will ultimately be forwarded to Sections for their consideration and possible amendment. The intention is to table a re-drafted constitution before annual conference in 2004. The document follows the format of the existing constitution; some rules are unchanged, some amended and some deleted. The deletion of some rules clearly results
in the re-numbering of certain other rules. THE CLARION CYCLING CLUB (deletion of NATIONAL)

These rules have to be ratified at an Annual General Meeting and agreed by the members vote in order to come into force. This is an important and basic part of our club and we as members should take an interest in the formulation of the rules by which we all agree to follow our cycling sport. If there are instances which appear to conflict with your ideas of how the club rules should be structured, now is the time to propose, through your section committee, an alteration or
amendment which will more suit your needs.
Round the Sections
Every issue of “Boots” will have a round up of local
news from the various Clarion Sections providing I can
put sufficient pressure on someone from each section to send the info to me.
Please send me photos and text of your sections acti Editor
BOLTON
Membership at Bolton stands at around 74 paid up members, so a strong section and is regularly been the largest section over then years.
Whilst clubruns are the staple events, we get involved in all two wheeled sporting activities including track, road, time trials, we even had aroller night like Stockport, we may challenge yet.
Excerpt from Bolton’s newsletter:-
DAVID JOHN HAVE DONE MORE AUDAXES THAN PAUL
Readers of ‘Arrivee’, the magazine of Audax UK soon learn that there are not many ways of
ivities and it will all go in.
writing about Audaxes and most of them are tedious. This piece is unlikely to be different. Most years I ride a couple of 200k events, not so much because I enjoy them, but to remind me how much hate them, so I can concentrae on other aspects of cycling. In the early days, John and I would creep home as the organiser was trying to shut up shop, just before the finish closed. Over the years we have honed our technique and have started to record more acceptable times.
Most riders adopt a “ride fast and light” policy, carry as little as possible and get food and drink in cafes. Our method is somewhat different and may be termed “ride slow, ride heavy”. For John this is because he tends to carry half a bike in spares and more tools than your favourite
11
bike shop. For me, I ride slow because lam, and er, heavy because am that too.
Given that we ride slowly we have no time to waste in cafes and need to find some form of food that is cheap, tasty and enticing and has all the correct nutritional contents. After years of painstaking research, the truth is out. John Martin, BSc, MSc, FRCPath, clinical scientist with more knowledge of human biochemistry than you can shake a 10mm spanner at, has come up with the ideal solution. Ring pull cans of baked beans, eaten cold from the can by the roadside. They are ideal. Cheap, nutritious, low fat and widely available. Tasty and enticing? Ah, well, you can’t have everything. Three tins per event, to be taken one at a time at 30, 60 and 90 miles. Just what the doctor ordered, washed down with bitter grapefruit juice and helped by fig roll biscuits. It’s worth it just for the looks you get from other riders. This year Chris Hoyle is planning to do a Super Randonneur series and then ride the 1200k Paris-Brest-paris event. We realised that coming second in the Bolton Clarion Audax Championship was something for us to aim at and if we put in some effort we could push Paul
Our impromptu clubruns of anything between 40 and 100 miles continue each Sunday. Our test attended clubrun was to the Clarion Clubhouse at Roughlee where, along
with Bury CTC, we were commemorating P
the life of our local legendary cyclist, Charlie Westlake. A commemorative bench finance: by our two clubs and individual donations ha been erected at the clubhouse, m a cyclin career spanning over 60 years Chariie had been a member of both clubs. So far this year we have only attracted one new member, Neil Chadwick, but he resides in Fiance so we cannot expect him to be other than an occasional attender on our clubruns.
Philip Albiez is our top racing man and this season he has broken his own club 10 miles record with a 21mm 22 sec ride. He has also been close to his 25 record with a 54.08. On his top form then, Phil had been hoping to be in the medals again in the Clarion 25
Hackin into third place.
The plan was hatched, a 200k Audax in each and every calendar month of the year.
At the time of writing we have completed four. Two different rides from Marple in January and February and in March one from Halifax. Normally at the start we tend to lurk at the back, but as a result of miscalculation on my part, I led through Halifax for the first 2 miles. The rest of the riders could not be pursuaded to clear off till we were out of the centre. In this event excelled myself. Not just walking up Fleet Moss, but walking down too. After all, it is steep and I was tired.
In April we rode the Chirk 200k and had our earliest finish, 5.55 from an 8.00am start.
So, four down and eight to go, though by the time you read this we should have done more. Andy Skinner came out for the first but has not come out since; maybe it’s something we said and putting our plans on the runs list has not tempted anyone else to join us.
I hope some more of you will come along for a shared day of misery and remember our motto of the year “If this is what we do for fun, what do we do when we want to have a bad time?”
championship but Paul Dickinson of Bolton Clarion nudged him out of third place with a personal best of 57.50 bettering Phil's time by 5 seconds. Bob Duckworth focused on the
Clarion track championships and was rewarded with a win in the Devil and a second place in the 12 laps scratch.
Mark Rudy was our only other rider and he had the pleasure of finishing third in the 12 laps scratch.

ROME TO THE DOME AN EPIC RIDE OF A LIFETIME
In cycling career spanning well over 50 years Bury section member Frank Jefferson arguably did the ultimate ride of his lifetime when he rode from Rome to the Dome (London) a distance of 1400 miles in 15 days during the month of June. He had been attracted by ff an event which required riders to raise at least £1 400 for Leukaemia Busters a charity focusing on the cure of children suffering from this disease. Alas Frank did not reach his target so undaunted he resolved to organise the ride himself. Using the internet facility he found a cheap rail journey from Manchester to London and flight from Stanstead to Rome. All the sponsors’ donations then are going direct to the charity. As he was organising himself it meant carrying all his kit which included a tent.
To leave the environs of Rome is not an easy task and he was into his second day before he left the Metropolis.
The next obstacle to overcome was the Alps
FENLAND
It has been another busy year for Fenland Clarion Section with a mixture of races, social events and happenings for members of the club.
Sadly we lost a very special member of the club, Jean Miller, in February. She had first joined the club in 1949 and was Social Secretary from 1977 until she passed away this year. We have all missed her greatly.
On a more cheerful note we’ve seen two club members getting engaged Nick Smith and Alison Ede (to Paul Lilley, also a recent member to the club). Alison Paul get married this September, and Nick Julia in 2004.
Kicking off the racing season the Fenland Road

then he rode celebrating his 68* Birthday as he rode through France.
On his way to the ferry it was almost disaster when
igave way to me hammering of the ride.
Resourceful as ever Frank made a temporary repair by patching with a drinks can. So far Frank has secured pledges amounting to £800 which currently being received. If any Clarion member would like to applaud Frank’s effort ina positive manner they should make their cheques out to Leukaemia Busters and sign on the back of the cheque to confirm if they are a taxpayer. the charity can then reclaim the tax paid on the income from the Inland Revenue.

acing team pretty well dominated the local NCRA Handicap Road Race Series in March. Steve Kaye took the overall victory with only one of the next 8 places not taken by a Fenland Clarion rider!
In April Peter Todd Dave Langlands popped over the channel to ride the Tour of Flanders Cyclo-Sportif (or the Ronde van Vlaanderen as the locals call it). They thoroughly enjoyed the event atmosphere along with over 13,000 other riders! They also had the bonus of being able to watch the real thing the following day. Would more Clarion members like to go next year? April also saw the club’s weekly Wednesday evening 10-mile time trials kick off once again seeing in excess of 40 riders some evenings and
13
never less than 20 come rain, hail or thunder! With a number of juniors, novices and women competing it was good to see a nice mix of riders. This series has been the greatest recruiting event for the club over the year. We also had a great turn out for all the club championship races, with some tight battles for top honours.
Our veteran members have been active in the local time trial series (N&DCA) with Richard Glover winning the Veterans Championship after a season long battle for the honours.
Other successes have been numerous on track grass track (Ian Clarke getting top placings in the National Grass Track Series) and in road racing and time trailing demonstrating the depth of talent in the club.
On the social cycling side Martin Sandra Green
organised a number of successful rides, including
aride in June with over 30 riders out enjoying the sunshine on a range of vintage, veteran and modern cycles. They also once again organised the club trip to the Mildenhall Cycling Weekend in August.
With September now on us the club still has several events to look forward to with the Helpston Classic Time Trail (including a £50-00 ‘winner takes all’ prize donated by Trevor Reade), the Club Hill Climb, Cyclo-cross race and a cycle jumble. Steve Clarke is organising the Cyclo-cross event on 30th November as part of the Eastern Region Series. In addition the club is working with Fenland District Council and British Cycling in setting up a Junior programme and Go Ride scheme.
Overall it has been a good year for the club and we look forward to 2004.

THE CLARION PURSUIT TEAM IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Arising from the Clarion track championships held at Manchester Velodrome in recent years it was realised that a Clarion pursuit team could realistically compete in the National Championships. A team comprising Ian Clarke and Dave Langlands, Fenland Section, and Duncan Hewitt, Julian Mortel and Will Sanderson from Stockport emerged. A contribution towards expenses was sanctioned by the national committee and the team had two hard training sessions at the velodrome. Ten teams competed for the title and nine Clarion supporters were there on the day to cheer our team. Our team was second off in the eliminating time trial so with lap times recorded our interest was heightened when we saw the Clarion ahead of some teams the scoreboard as the trials progressed. Our team finished in seventh place with a 4min 45.274 sec performance. In the semi finals then we were matched against second fastest
qualifying team VC Londres who had recorded 4min 28.412 in the qualifying trial. For this match Julian Mortel replaced Duncan Hewitt who was obliged to withdraw because of work commitments. Our team rode well together and held off the inevitable until the half distance where they were caught. This meant our team remained in seventh place in the
competition. VC Londres then qualified for the final but they were in turn caught by VC Raphael.
Sophisticated clubs with financial backing bring together slick teams with an inbuilt advantage. It is obvious, then, that it is going to be very difficult to finish in the top four. Arguably though it is a good thing for us to continue entering a team in national track championships and increase general awareness of our ‘beautiful’ club and possibly create interest for prospective members.
Our thanks go to...
Being a committee member or an officer of any national organisation can be a hard and often thankless task.
Therefore our thanks must go to Frank Bibby, Graham
Pearce and Kevin Hulbert for their valuable time, freely given in order to carry out their duties on the National Committee over the past few years.

The Editor,
BOOTS SPURS,
Nothing makes one feel old as much as having to write to an editor and acquaint them with the “facts of life”, so to speak.
The reason why nationally Clarion members cannot compete under one banner goes back many years, possibly into the 1930's. At that time, when cycling was in its heyday, the ruling body, (RTTC) received complaints that a national club was using its widespread strength to win events. It was decided by that august and monopolistic body that the Clarion CC was too big for its “boots” and that individual areas must have their own racing body. Hence the formation of the various “cycling and athletic clubs,” such as the Middx C& AC., of which for a very short time I was a member. The Hendon Clarion of which I was a member then decided on its own racing club, now sadly defunct as is that section under the style of HENDON RACING CYCLING CLUB. This had the result that a fast racing man from the north, could not be paired in a team with a member from down south. It also meant that the RTTC gained revenue as each C&AC had to pay a separate joining fee and annual subscription. As far as am aware this situation/ruling remains the same today. As a member also of the Tricycle Association, each area also has to have its own racing section and pay separate dues.
In view of the much smaller size of the Clarion as opposed to pre 1940 figures, perhaps the individual C AC’S could seek to get this rule changed via their own RTTC district councils. Trust that this clarifies the position,
Yours truly,
As usual
ON three wheels

The financial statements reveal that the financial position remains strong.
The excess of expenditure over income meant a depletion od assets but this was not of such a significance that any change of policy is necessary at this time.
The cost of the Easter Meet was the main cause of the deficit.
Deposits at bank increased as a result of the sale of clothing.

The Oakhill Challenge
at Manchester Velodrome
22nd May 2003
As Peter Roscoe said in his newsletter, “This splendid evening was one when we demonstrated the best of Bury Clarion”. It was certainly one of the best track meets I’ve ridden and we (Bury Clarion) gave it our best shot, unfortunately our best was not good enough agaist the mighty Oakhill riders!
Phillip Albeiz, who holds the Bury Clarion record at 25 miles and this year was voted Bury Metro Sportsman of the Year, brought along his Mother, Uncle and Son, they were duly impressed by his winning the first event, a twenty lap scratch race, no mean achievement for a rider who had only been on the track once before!
Paul Sherrat finished second in the twelve lap scratch and Paul had never ridden the track ever before.
A blistering finish gave victory to Oakhill’s Geoff Downs in the 12 lap scratch, but he was unable to hold of Bury’s Adrian Smith in the sprint final. Bury’s pursuit team rode well together, they looked really good on the track, but were beaten by the Oakhill team, who went a lot faster (So that’s the secret).
Oakhill then were clear winners of the challenge match and took home their trophy. Due thanks to oakhill for taking the initiative an in particular to Charles Jepson, Oakhill and Natonal Secretary for all his hard work in organising this excellent event.
Although Oakhill were the winners on the night, don’t think there were any losers, how could we be losers when we had so much fun?

Harry Aspden 1910 2003
Life is a one way street, and as we traverse it’s complex path we are left to our own resources to leave a mark by which we may be remembered. Vets have their own peculiar way of ensuring such imortality and in Harry Aspden, who died in April we have such a man, who in his lifetime did indeed mark well.
The Clarion is so much poorer for his loss, yet cycling is so much richer with the legacy he has left behind. Harry Aspden Big H to his many Clarion colleagues, writer of many articles for Cycling and Sporting Cyclist, never drove a car, but always went by his chosen mode of transport, the bicycle. Be it to the shops locally, or nipping out for cycle equipment on a 100 mile round trip to his friend Ron Kitching in Harrogate.
His records, age related milestones along his road of life numbered almost 50. He was a former winner of the KH Trophy at a Buxton Easter Meet and his ‘Win on Standard’ triumphs were prolific, although he was always reluctant to accept the medals, as I once found out when I tried to deliver his Clarion Best All Rounder medals.
He was secretary of Blackburn Section where he met his future wife Carrie and also he was responsible for directing the affairs of the North Lancs. Clarion C AC for many years. His Clarion membership years totalled 75, another record in itself.
We remember Harry as a true Clarion Cyclist and a gentleman. We say farewell and salutehim “BOOTS” Brian Nightingale, North Lancs. Clarion
