INTRODUCTION
The Editors Word EEC
Firstly let me say a few thank yous to all of those who contributed to this issue of the Boots and Spurs, newsletter. It took a little cajoling but never the less in true Clarion spirit those trusted came up trumps. Thank you again.
However, next time I will need to spread out my requests a little further as I do not wish to become a burden on those of you kind enough to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard. So, how about it then? if you have something to say, drop me a line, if you don’t then start thinking about it and then drop me a line. I want to hear any news about members not only racing, but anything else, anything related to the Clarion, news, views and photos especially. I’m waiting.
Everyone who went enjoyed the Easter Meet at Llandudno and those of you who stayed to listen to the 30 odd man Welsh Male Voice Choir certainly were given a treat. The mass ride up the Orme went down (or up) very well, everyone seemed to appreciate the slightly competitive socially informal ride and the great views that they gained after a lung busting (at any speed) effort. Hopefully we'll be able to find a similar activity for 1997.

The Llandudno Clarion Easter Meet A Stockport View
The name of Stockport Clarion has in recent years become synonymous with undressing. 1996 has been no different, but due to some over-zealous policing by the Boyos in Blue, it has finally made the national press. To be exact the story made The Manchester Evening News, The Daily Mail, Breakfast TV, Granada Reports, Look north-west, Piccadilly Radio, and that renowned journal the Llandudno Weekly News (Headline Naked

Football On Prom"), to name but several. Nobody was monitoring the New York Times. For the record, four Stockport lads were cautioned for having a nude game of football on the Prom following the Clarion Fancy Dress 'Do'. Rumours that two old ladies who were out for a late night stroll had a stroke are untrue. None of the Stockport lads let them stroke anything. If it's as cold next year then the awesome foursome will just describe themselves to passers by. The following morning, collapsed in the HQ of the Clarion 25 at
a time better spent sleeping off hangovers, a make-up-clad sweat-stained contingent from Stockport contemplated their alcohol-induced efforts over some tea flavoured warm water. Still wearing his eye-liner and mascara from his prize-winning outfit of the night before, Julian Mortel looked to many to be a likely winner of the ladies prize. However, the unanimous opinion of the Kaylighed Clarion Contingent was that the Easter Meet is an excellent social experience for all ages, but that next year we won't have that last beverage.

McCorkell wins BCF
National Bronze Medal
Stockport Clarion juvenile trackie, Andrew McCorkell has won the first male track medal for many years.
In the BCF National Championships at the open-air Leicester Velodrome Andrew lost the first of three legs but won the second and third to take Bronze.
Andrew is apparently Stockport Club mascot and a member of the infamous open-air Welsh football squad.
9th in National Pursuit
Fenland’s Alison Ede has shown how it’s possible to recover from a serious bike fall when she broke her collar bone and took nearly three months off racing. Alison recorded the 9th fastest time in the BCF Ladies National Pursuit championships at Manchester.
Stockport Control Manchester Track League
Scanning pages of every weeks Cycling Weekly shows that the Stockport Clarion are dominating this Velodrome, riders ‘up-there’ include Andrew McCorkell,
Tony Coughlan, Graham Pearce, Will Sanderson and Duncan Hewitt.
RTTC time trial series
Christine Roberts won the Mid- Shropshire Wheelers opening series event with a 1.19.48 nearly 7 minutes faster than second placed rider for the 50Km distance.
7th in WCRA champs
Lindsay Clarke took 7th place in the WCRA championships in Suffolk. Lindsay, still suffering from a ‘mystery virus’ that is sweeping through the Fenland Clarion was not too pleased with her performance.
Lindsay went Bungay Jumping
Given half a lap head-start in the Vets and Ladies event in the Bungay Criteriums Lindsay jumped away and stayed away to take first place overall, surprised organisers decided to apply equal opportunities techniques and would only award Lindsay the ladies prize.

Boom boom ackeracker-Ackerman boom
Phil Ackerman of Fenland took the win of his life in the Peterborough club’s arch rival Peterborough CC’s own promotion road race. After multiple breakaways Phil still had enough left to ride off the front into the ‘red mist’ to win by a bike length and secured his second cat’ license in the process.
Oooh ya devil
Tony Coughlan (Stockport) won the ‘devil takes the hindmost’ event at the Coventry CC meet at Leicester in May.
Oooh ya devil 2
Andrew McCorkell (Stockport) won the juvenile ‘devil takes the hindmost’ event at the Coventry CC meet at Leicester in May.
Oooh ya devil 3
Duncan Hewitt (Stockport) didn’t win the ‘devil takes the hindmost’ event at the Coventry CC meet at Leicester in
May, he could only manage a third place in the senior 8Km event and so isn’t worthy of a mention here.
51.29 for a ‘25’ from Paul Hodgkinson
In an event won by ex-Clarion rider Gary Dighton, Paul Hodgkinson did a ‘storming’ ride in the Mid-Oxon 25. Paul’s 51.29 appears to be an ‘unconfirmed’ record, beating Gary Wharton’s (Nottingham) 10 year old record of 51.52.
World Masters Challenge
Dave Langlands qualified 4th to ride the ride-off for Bronze in the 30-34 category. 4.53 for 400m. Dave was caught in the finals to take 4th place. Tan Clarke qualified 6th with 5.06 in the 30-34 category, both from the Fenland.
Derek Hodgins, Stockport Clarion, was “knocked off” after a heat of the 60+ age category.
The other rider gave Derek 2 broken ribs and a black eye, stopping any chances of bettering his silver medal from last year.

Timed just right Auctioned Silver Clarion Badge fetches £150
Dear Mr Clarke We timed that just right for the auction. I
had no idea it would fetch that much. I thought about £50 or £60. It is a good idea to help the racing team as it would be a help for them and the badge in the hands of the National Committee member!
The newsletters were interesting, I only wish they did touring in the time we spent with the Aston Clarion, we would have still been with them.
Yours sincerely Fred and Mabel Cox

Yes, I am always planning a holiday in the UK, but we all know what Robbie Burns said about ‘plans’. Just wait and see. ‘would very much like to visit you in Peterborough, how about a pint of Guinness (Batemans or Ruddles more close to the mark here ed). I would also plan a visit to Bob Jacksons in Leeds, perhaps to order a new frame, seen any new Jackson frames? How do they look? You never see these makes in these parts,
Jackson frames were excellent, hope they still are.
I am in contact with Reynolds shoes in Northampton, mine are 18 years old and the best ‘boots’ I have ever used.

TEAM CLARION NEWS
Not an outstanding season as far as Team Clarion is concerned however as always some progress has been made by the team. During the summer we had our best individual placing on general classification in a stage race and made our overseas debut. On the down side we haven’t done as many races as I would have liked and really I’ve not done the job quite as well as I would have liked. We’ll cover the good points first with reports on the two races in question and leave the post mortem on why we have done much until later.
WARDALE IMPRESSES UP NORTH Graeme Wardale rode to one of the best performances of his career in the Tyne Velo Two Day in late June. To boot, the young man from South Shields was in National Clarion colours and was also the best North East division finisher too.
As is always the case when we turn up at a race in an area that is used to seeing the local Clarion section there’s a lot of people asking our boys about the team, the Tyne Velo event was no different and we seemed to generate some interest by our presence. Goodwill was further strengthened as we also helped out with neutral service, thus giving us the chance to see our lads in action too.
The team comprised of Tim Duckett (Fenland), William Sanderson (Stockport), Carl Price Graeme Wardale (both Sunderland). All were cheery as we prepared ourselves prior to the start and it was good to see young Neil Wallbank (Sunderland) who was dropping his brother Martin off en route to the Enron Junior Two day.
The first stage was over the Circuit of the Reservoir route and it was a tough affair. Graeme used his local knowledge and climbing skills to good effect, getting in the race winning move. This was no mean feat with John Charlesworth and Davie Cook for company.
Unfortunately Graeme just lost touch on the last climb and came in seven seconds adrift in eighth spot. Will was our next chap 6.26 down and 21st, Carl struggled and came in 34th while Tim, who hasn’t had a good year failed to finish.
The second stage was a 8.5m TT over much of the same route. Graeme was again our best man and his 20.34 kept him in 8th spot on GC. Will notched a 21.25, Tim was allowed to take part but not for GC and scored 21.33. Carl was a little further back in 23.05.
The following day was going to be a tough affair. The first section was flat enough but then the riders hit the 6 mile climb, this split the field apart. Will pulled his wheel over on the steepest section and this in effect put him out of the race.
Graeme was again one of the leaders and with two laps remaining he set off in pursuit of Charlesworth and Cook. A lap on his own and a superb effort was spoiled when some strange assistance was given by the assistant commissaire to two of Graeme’s closest challengers. The riders were dropped but towed back to the chasing group and had an easy ride on his bumper for half a lap. The same pair, Jimmy Millar (Paisley RT) and Mike Andrew (Orange) then tazzed off up the rode and past our man, whose efforts were beginning to tell.
Still Graeme gritted his teeth and hung on

TEAM NEWS
for another 10 miles or so, to finish in 6th spot and 6th overall an excellent ride and the best by a Team Clarion rider yet.
OFF TO HOLLAND I guess some doubting Thomas’ thought we’d never do it, but we have and we’ll be going back soon.
So we didn’t set the World alight with our performances, but we raced against some top Dutch opposition in a country where bike riders are appreciated and bike races are a way of life.
Calder’s Stuart Bowering helped get us into a couple of races in late July and gave us the phone number of some digs. The rest was up to us. Will Sanderson, Duncan Hewitt (both Stockport), Graeme Wardale, Carl Price (both Sunderland) and Dave Langlands made up the team and were as keen as mustard.
We took the Chunnel and drove right through to the Dekkers Hotel in Ossendrecht, just over the Dutch border. It was a long day but fortunately we weren’t racing until about 4pm the following afternoon.
The following morning was spent checking the bikes over and generally getting ready. We had look at the local bike shop too.
Then it was off to the race, a crit at St Maartensdijke over 100km around a tricky 1.5km circuit. When we arrived the B class race was in progress and the lads went off to sign on and generally loosen up. A bike race fan came up and asked for our team photo. I said we hadn’t got one but took his details and said we’ll send him one next year.
The team got called up one by one and then it was off. And god what a blistering pace from the gun, no holds barred. After
just a few laps Duncan moved towards the front of the lined pack (It was lined out all afternoon). Then with a monumental effort he was across to the break. But unfortunately it never let up and just got quicker and poor old Duncan had to ease off.
The rapid pace from the gun (that didn’t let up right to the end.) was just too much for our guys and the all lasted for about half an hour. Disappointed they all rode the 35km home.
Next day and determined to do better we embarked on a similar race at Nieuw Vossmeer again 100km with 100 plus riders, the only saving grace was it had left hand corners. We decided that a more concerted warm up was required in order to cope with the expected fast start.
This helped, but a number of ex-pro’s didn’t and neither did the 30/35 mph throughout.
Lap one saw Mister William Sanderson (as the commentator called him) crash out. The others did much better, the warm up must have helped. Carl Price did the best lasting to 1 hour 15 minutes.
It was then off home and the long trip back gave us plenty of time to deliberate. The general consensus was that they wanted to return and with knowing what to expect felt they could do better next time.
The lads were not disillusioned, to the contrary they were encouraged and learnt a lot. That’s good, because after all that’s why we’re doing this and why we went.

Joan began racing when most people are taking up dominoes, knitting and generally slowing down.
Starting up with the Barnsley Road Club she gained an RTTC 50 mile team championship medal and has PBs of:

Joan Lister and Allan Wray ride their bygone bikes along the new Hemsworth bypass earlier this year
Joan has also ‘stokered’ a tandem to a 20.54 and a 55.04 for 10 and 25 respectively. She also holds a vets age record at 50 miles of 1.59.40.
As if this wasn’t enough Joan also organises the Calder section’s evening 10’s, she is the sections membership secretary and also generally motivates all the club in all events and activities.
The photo below shows Joan and Allan Wray, Joan is riding a 1910 Raleigh with a 242 frame and 28” wheels with a single gear.

A drunk boards a train, plonks himself down next to a priest, and begins to read a discarded newspaper. After a while he looks up and says “Tell me father, what causes arthritis?”
It was just the opening the priest wanted. “JT will tell you my man”, he said with a passion, “It’s immoral living, too much drinking and smoking, and no doubt sins of the flesh. How long have you had it?” “Oh it’s not me father,” replies the drunk, “It says here that the Pope’s got it.”
A Hundred Years Ago
In the Clarion newspaper’s cycling column on 2nd May 1896 appeared a song, contributed by Dr. John Johnston of Bolton Clarion Cycling Club. It was to be sung to the tune of ‘Bonnie Dundee’, and had five verses. Here are just two:
A Cycle Song
Let others sing loudly of pastimes and joys Endeared to the hearts of men, maidens
and boys. My ditty shall be of the pleasure I feel When mounted secure on my dearly loved
wheel.
Let the rich in their coaches and
carriages roll. My cycle is better by far than them all.
The wheel of Dame Fortune to them may bring wealth
But my flying wheel is the wheel of good health!
New membership cards
At the recent committee meeting a new style membership card was discussed. The general idea is to have a membership card that will be issued by the National Office but will include section names also. This way individual sections will not need to produce separate cards.
The membership card will also be reduced to a credit card size.
Please let us know what you think or if you have any other or better ideas.
Thanks to Nottingham
Thanks go out to the Nottingham Clarion who have offered to provide refreshments at the Clarion Track Championships with the proceeds going to Team Clarion.
Obituar: Ramon Romero Sunderland Clarion died in April as a result of stomach cancer. Ramon was only a member for several years but, Ray was one of the more visible members of Sunderland Clarion

forward to spending more time on two wheels and it is indeed sad that he has been deprived of the enjoyment that he would have gained.

All this takes time
This Easter at Llandudno I was surprised when extra medals were needed because not everyone claimed theirs through the proper channels.
All Clarion Championships and medal claims have to go via Audrey Waddilove records sec.) who processes these into her record books and then informs me of who is due to what. I then have to contact the medal supplier and engraver in Brentwood (Essex).
All this takes time!!
Meanwhile my next task is to inform all sections secretaries of who are the champions and prizewinners. This has a time limit as well, no later than the end of February. Neither I or Audrey cannot do our jobs efficiently if we do not get co-operation from event organisers, club secretaries or individual record breakers etc., should there be no significant improvement then I shall be forced to consider my involvement with the Clarion in an official capacity (and do Ian out of a good feed when he calls in). I have been working for the Clarion since 1980 and there comes a time when enough is enough. So come on folks, we are not clairvoyants send us some information and help us to help you.
