INTRODUCTION
HAPPY EASTER
So, here it is newsletter number two, this either means that this is the last one you’ll read this year or that we are trying for four rather than the usual two.
Time is rushing on now, by the time you read this I hope that every one of you has booked your accommodation for the Easter Meet at Llandudno. Maybe youive heard me say this before but Llandudno (pronounced Chlandidtno, or is that Clariondidn’tknow) is really, yes really, my favourite. Don’t let Skegness know but it’s true! It has everything that Skeggy has and more, much more, it is also guaranteed to be sunny, trust me With the Easter Meet about to come round the next bend like a combine harvester on a country lane, I expect your thoughts are focused on summer days where the thermals are at the bottom of the bottom-most drawer and worn-out overshoes are as useful as an ashtray on a track bike. Maybe you are about to hit peak fitness or maybe you’re planning this year’s tour, whatever, I think it’s a great time for us bikies. The bad weather (I hope) is now behind us and still some time left to get ‘really’ fit and ‘really’ cram the miles in, but don’t forget...have you paid your membership? and, has it been sent to head office? because..if you haven’t then you'll be losing out. Easter is time for the annual conference and section voting power is based on ‘paid up’ members, worst still if you’re riding (or have ridden) any National Clarion events then strictly you shouldn’t be allowed to win anything
So far the National Clarion hasn’t taken sides on the great BCF/Doyle debate, it was discussed at the last committee meeting but that’s all, no sides, no conclusions. I reckon that if we were to debate this that any result would be close to 50/50 so why bother? Well, you tell me, you’re the membership. It seems to me that the issue isn’t really one of blame or ‘real’ rule breaking but one of differences and incompatibilities, at the very least a case of minor personality clashes. So let’s try not to take sides, it could possibly drive a wedge in our own club just as it seems to have done across the country. hope that soon we will see that common sense and clear signs of activity to promote the interests of cycling and cyclist will prevail. Maybe it won't, maybe the Sports Council will step in, maybe the
BCF will spend all of it’s 1996 membership fees on legal charges, maybe this time next year the League International will be running British Road Racing, maybe the National Clarion’s membership will increase to it’s former glory and be able to lead with some form or sense and cyclability, who knows? I don’t!
You may also notice the odd advertiser in our new ‘magazine’ it’s their support that helps us get this newsletter to you and saves us having to put the subs up. So next time you are about to make a ‘buying’ decision why not support those who support us.
See you on the road or in the bar.
Tan Clarke National Secretary, lead-out man, burned-out trackie, carrot-crunching Fenboy.

EASTERMEET ‘96
APRIL 1996
Soe what happens at the annual conference? Who eares? Well, you should?
please read on...
So imagine the scenario, you’ve danced all night, well between drinks, and then Saturday morning comes round, it’s conference time, you have a hang over or worse, maybe you’d just rather go down to the arcades and lose some more money, who knows maybe you want to go out on the bike.
STOP, WAIT A MINUTE WHAT KIND OF TALK IS THIS?
Save it, save the money, save your legs till the Great Orme bike ride, what you need is a brisk walk down the promenade, breathe in some fresh sea air and generally feel like a million dollars, hey it’s conference time. 10.30am you even had time for an extra slice of toast.
Did you know that the person typing this newsletter is not even elected at conference, makes him sound like Arthur Scargill doesn’t it. Well that’s rules, democratically decided and written down for all to see.
The democratic process is on-going, the conference is where we decide to vote ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ to conference resolutions. You can even vote for the committee members, it’s them who elect, nominate, or just leave be, the National Secretary.
We spend your money, we run your races, we write your newsletters, we organise this weekend, the least you can do is come along
once in a while and help us make up our minds. Call it Club spirit, call it just taking an interest.
On the agenda is a resolution from the Fenland section to add a 50p levy to all entry fees to National Clarion promoted racing events, with the monies generated going to the Clarion Racing Team. So if you’re a racing member and think itis a good idea then you need to be there as a delegate to vote in favour, or even to vote against.
Also there is a motion from the National Committee to create an official slogan ‘Fellowship is Life’ this too will be voted on.
We also have two vacancies for committee members, so if you’ve forgotten to nominate anyone this can still be done from the floor. Maybe you have had a few ‘beefs’ about things at head office, maybe you just don’t like me, maybe you just want to have a say or put an input into the general organisation of the club.
Sections not represented on committee or officials are: Teesside, West of Scotland, Bay Clarion, Sunderland, Bury, Wyre, York and Heanor or even any Central section members.
Help us to help you, please come along. Tan Clarke

DESPARATELY SEEKING OLD CLARION HANDBOOKS
Dear Ian
..in 1986 I lent a clubmate my 1964 Clarion Handbook in which I had an article on the history of the bicycle. He was posted abroad and took the handbook with him. I’d dearly love to obtain another copy. (From memory I think it had Billy Holmes, the Hull International on the front cover. I’d gladly pay for a copy or make a donation to the Clarion or the Racing Team.
I'd be grateful if you can help with the above request.
Yours sincerely Harry Brooks Boots!

OUT OF ACTION FROM FENLAND 1...
Dear Ian
I would just like to make it very clear that the accident in the Rockingham Forest Wheelers Road Race was not caused by or even vaguely associated with me.
It’s just that with only one kilometre to go, every back wheel, rear mech., tractor, grass verge and fallen body was just a blur behind this veil of red mist.
Yours in sport, Phillip Akerman Fenland Clarion
PS. If you are thinking that all that winter training is now wasted as I sit nursing my broken collar bone, you’re wrong....... It was worth it just to make every one of you Fenland ‘carrot crunchers’ suffer on my wheel.
OUT OF ACTION FROM FENLAND 2... Dear Sir
May I through your pages pass on my painful lessons taught to me by a nice young French motorist whilst attending the first Fenland Clarion Training Camp.
Lesson one
Just because the French like performing nuclear tests in the South Pacific doesn’t mean that they don’t have time for other useful research projects (like Cycle and Helmet crash tests)
Lesson two
Never assume that French drivers are aware of cyclists just because they run the greatest cycle race in the world (only marginally ahead of the Oliver Twist RR)
Lesson three
The laws of probability are that you are more likely to be splattered by a Frenchy in a car than win the National Lottery.
Lesson four Just because the aforesaid motorist gets out of his

PARTNER REQUIRED Dear Guv’ So, me old cock sparrar how’s the missus? I hope you're getting as fit I am, the only problem
is that I’m looking for a racing tandem partner, maybe you can help...
The sort of bloke I need is a diamond geezer who’s as sound as pound and as fit as a butchers dog. Then I’ll be sorted. George Fenwick London Clarion IT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE Dear Ian Just a few lines of congratulations on the splendid
issue of ‘boots and spurs’ (or the new look Clarion newsletter) received today.
It is a splendid achievement to have made it so attractive and it reflects the hard work you have put into it, as well as doing so much for the club. Again accept my congratulations and appreciation.
All the best,
Albert Winstanley Life member, will be 80 in April and still riding as much as ever.
(thanks should also be diverted to Steve Clarke, Richard Newcombe, Robin Newcombe and the team at Keyprint for the layout and printing, ed.)
WHATS IT ALL ABOUT, CLARKIE? Dear Mr Clarke
I’ve been a member of the Clarion Cycling Club for some years now and wish to know the meaning of a few things:
What does ‘boots and spurs’ mean? a vet’ in my club says that this dates back to the days of old when men were bold and rode horses in suits of armour. Maybe Derek Hodgins will know, he was around then.
Where does the name ‘Clarion’ come from? I understand that this is some sort of scavenging crow, maybe one of your members knows the answer.
Yours sincerely
Mr D Pye ‘Bolt-on’ Clarion

TEAM CLARION
LINDSAY WINS IN NATIONAL CLARION COLOURS
Not many changes since we last spoke, however we did put a Clarion team into the Eddie Soens Handicap at the Aintree Race Course on Merseyside at the beginning of March. Calder’s Stuart Bowering and Fenland’s Dave Langlands made their debut performances in the 150 plus field and teamed up with First Cat Tim Duckett and top lady Lindsay Clarke, both of Fenland. Lindsay took the ladies honours and got the Clarion a bit of publicity in Cycling Weekly and also the Liverpool Echo. Her male teammates didn’t fare so well and really it wasn’t a superb day. The best effort was by Stuart who finished in the main pack after starting with the first cats and elite riders (the so called Super Group). For Tim and Dave it was bad luck and misfortune, with Tims brand new freewheel falling apart at around half distance and Dave taking a tumble onto the grass and although the four remounted he stood no chance of rejoining the race.
COME SEE US
Come and see the team in action at one of the races listed on the opposite page, we’d love to see you. There may be more races added as the season unfolds and we’ll try to keep you informed through these pages.
NO HELP
Since the last issue, not one letter or phonecall offering assistance to the team has been received. Don’t be shy! there must be someone out there who could help the team in someway.
Team managers, mechanics and masseurs are needed for specific races and a fund raiser and
APRIL 1996
press officer is desperately required.
Perhaps you could do a bit locally by organising a stall at a carboot sale to raise a few quid or perhaps a big prize raffle, whatever, it would be of great help.
Contact Steve Clarke on 01733 575421.
SPONSORSHIP PACK
If you know someone who might like to be a team sponsor, we have a presentation pack available. Various cost effective deals can be arranged to suit all budgets.
Contact Steve Clarke for more information.
GB DUTY
Team Clarion mechanic Mark Ingham (Central section) is off ith the GB Junior Team to the Four Day Basse Goulaine race in France. Mark made his international spanner debut in 1995.
THE 1996 TEAM CLARION SQUAD
Just to recap, the Clarion squad for the coming season is:
Graeme Wardale Sunderland Ist Cat Tim Duckett Fenland Ist Cat William Sanderson Stockport 2nd Cat Duncan Hewitt Stockport 2nd Cat Carl Price Sunderland 2nd Cat Dave Langlands Fenland 2nd Cat Stuart Bowering Calder 2nd Cat Lindsay Clarke Fenland Ist Cat Lady
These riders will form the basis of the teams, however if someone comes along with a string of good performances we'll likely get them involved and flying the flag.
If you think you should be on the team send Steve your palmares.

RACING ROUNDUP
From the results pages of the cycling press there hasn’t been too much coverage of the Clarion riders, although a few have been performing with credit during the winter and rest no doubt training hard for the new season.
Most notably two Calder youngsters have been putting in some excellent performances in Cyclo Cross events. Matthew Armitage and Michael Burton scored sixth and fourteenth respectively in the National Juvenile Championship’s at Swansea in South Wales.
In the North of England Championships at Consett in County Durham, Matthew was placed second, one place ahead of his teammate Michael and the pair were rarely out of the top six locally Well done lads, Keep it up!
On the Track at the Manchester Velodrome, the Stockport boys have been making the most of the excellent facilities.
Super Vet Derek Hodgins has been winning loads of races in the First Division and clubmate William Sanderson has also had a few wins.
In the Premier Division, Duncan Hewitt seems to have adapted to the higher standard, scoring a number of wins after being promoted from the First Division, following his League Title last winter.
Tony Coughlan has also been in the placings on a number of occasions. Further examination of the results shows that Paul Morphett of Crewe won the Group One Devil in the First Division meeting at the beginning of March.
With the Road season just underway, Fenland’s Lindsay Clarke took the Ladies award in Team Clarion colours at the classic Eddie Soens Handicap on Merseyside, she then followed this up with a sixth in the Northants Cycle Racing Association Handicap.

I am glad that I decided to attend this dinner, it was a fine affair with good food, entertainment and all the proceedings associated with such a milestone in Clarion history.
Guest Speaker and Cycling Weekly cartoonist had us in stitches with his speech and toast to the club. The guest of honour was Councillor Frank Alan Rushton the Mayor of Bolton and other guests included Penny Farthing riders in period dress Merlin Evans and Alistair Skinner.
The Bolton Clarion has grown significantly over the last few years and looks set to continue this trend for some time. “hanks should go to all officials and helpers of the dinner and of course officials and members whose enthusiasm has helped Bolton Clarion to grow to such a size again. Well done.

Wanted 1
Although we rather like our new look magazine, here at HQ (my spare bedroom), we could really do with some help on the production side. We are desperately short of topical Clarion photo’s and if you could write an article or do some race reports we'd all be ever so grateful. If you take any photo’s at the Eastermeet that come out good, let us have a copy and we’ll more than likely include it in the next issue.
Wanted 2
Advertisers are needed to help with production costs and to help support the Clarion Team. Contact Ian Clarke on 01733 577108 or his big brother, Steve on 01733 331500 during the day. They'll be able to sort you out with all the necessary and make sure you get maximum exposure.
News Needed
If you or your section have any news items about what’s happened, or what’s going to happen and you’d like to share it with your clubmates in the Clarion, then we’d love to hear from you.
You can send it by post to 18 Sapperton, Werrington, Peterborough PE4 5BS or Fax it to 01733 331511 or Email: keyprint@atlas.co.uk.
Hell of the Fens
After finalising their Spring Road Races the Fenland section are planning an interesting 1997 edition. Still in the knocking idea’s about stage and looking into the real practicalities of it, the Peterborough club hope to run a Paris-Roubaix style event with a few sections of rough track. It is hoped that this will make up for the distinct lack of hills and give the race some real character. All they’re hoping for is that it rains hard and blows a gale, then the riders will know they’ve been in a race
Are you getting it regularly?
If you know of any clubmates who are not getting their copy of Boots Spurs please let the editorial staff know as soon as possible. It could be a change of address or knowledge of subs payment yet to filter through. It is important that the news and views from every section is read and discussed

5000 miles with the wind behind you.
Well I thought it wasn’t possible but I have been sent a new book through the post aimed at leisure cyclists looking for pre-planned and relatively comfortable routes.
Written by Michael Brooke and Richard Hutchins, the book details many many rides all using the prevailing south-westerly wind and taking advantages of rail stations and Youth Hostels.
The book titled ‘Easy Cycling in Britain’ uses grid references and ordnance survey maps for detail. After reading sections of this book it seems to be a good reference book which gives you non-major road journeys ideal for low to medium distance tourists, families or new cyclists wanting to be guaranteed of choosing routes that keeps them away from the traffic, wind and the worst hills. The book also includes a fact-filled reference and addresses section filled with stuff that even after 20 years of cycling I still didn’t know.
Priced at £6.99 the book can be ordered using ISBN no 899 465 00 6
